I did a search on this and found numerous threads in the archives section.
So why no rear view camera? It would be extremely useful in many situations. Surprisingly in most of the old threads I was reading there was a bunch of debate on such a simple feature, but not a single good reason not to have them.
So how about a rear view button like in MW4 or just about any driving game? The awareness bonus that this would provide would be invaluable for both individuals and teams.

Well and such a peep sound while walking backwards- so players who stand in your back realize that 100 ton atlas does walk backwards...

Here's a reason:
MWO's build of CryEngine can't render multiple cameras in a scene without producing a new completely new instance of the rendering pipeline.

Because rear view mirrors are so 2750.
(I hear you and think its a necessity, but thanks Hornsby for the reason why.)
Its pretty sad when MW2 can do so with its primitive engine yet with all the prettiness with CryEngine, it can't even give you a rear view.

I was not intent on a picture in picture rear view alone. A rear view button that switches your entire field of view like in MW4 would be sufficient. Just use some static or digital switching sounds when you push the rear view button so it seems like some sort of transitional view through a camera or monitor. Besides mirrors would make no sense on a mech anyways.
I cannot believe the number of features that have been in games since the 90's that people say are impossible in this game, I just can't.
I'll say it again. There really needs to be a way to see behind your multi-ton death machine.

Actually... a simple solution would be to use the 3rd person camera pod... just deploy it to the front of the mech instead. Would just be a matter of using the same coding, and a different button to launch it the other direction...

That would work. I for one wouldn't be too picky on how it's done. Especially if it utilized something that was already in the game.
