Here is a thought, have the development team to clue us in on the core game play concept(s) they want to follow and see if it floats with the fan base.

A sort of research before development.

It might save them allot of grief and aggravation to ask around before developing a game that the fan base is not too excited about.

The reason I am so bold to point this out is because everyone has a different idea on how this game should be and what they would be interested in playing. The idea is to post the current concept from the development team and also some alternative concepts that the fan base can vote on to give the DEV team a solid idea what the fan base wants and expects in this game.

What the benefit is, is that the game is fan base driven which should make the game very successful because it is or will be what the majority of the fan base wants.

For example:
  • Mech Warrior Online is a 12 versus 12 PvP FPS that revolves around a team death match mode which is to eliminate the enemy team to complete the mission or with the match. With each battle the player can grow in experience and climb ( or grind ) a ladder of mechs and skills by using a player created Mech Warrior. This type of game play involves several maps that offer different types of terrain. This concept follows a simple FPS type of format with a few player character skill sets that offer some advantages in combat.

  • Mech Warrior Online is a persistent game worlds based on the Battletech roll playing game and series of fictional books. MWO allows players to enter a player versus player and or player versus AI missions on various scales to include single player ( with AI lance mates ) , team play scalable 2 to 4 mechs up to platoon 16 mechs and company sized elements 64 vs 64 for Clan and Mercenary player based groups. In addition to this MWO supports various vehicle types for a true combined arms experience.
Game play takes place on various planetary terrains and in urban areas to include the competitive area type play ( single player, team or AI )

Players can travel from planet to planet and experience various markets, trading, technology, missions, and mission terrains. Incorporated into this concept is territory that can be captured and utilized by "clans or the like" Thus supporting a player semi-driven economy. ( eventually with drop ships and the like )

Players create a character or avatar and develop skill sets that improve combat and other skills such as trade, research, development, politics, contracts and manufacturing.
Concept is more like WoW, Eve Online, Star Wars Galaxies ect…

These are just a couple of ideas so that you guys get what I’m talking about in the way of concepts. Ideally the Dev team places several choices up for the fan base vote to see what concepts or features would be most desired in the game.

My only comment on this. The vocal minority of the boards does not really represent the majority of players all of the time. Only %5-%15 of a community is actually vocal on boards (well with BT we might be up to %20) but that really is a small number of your overall player base. I know this AND I'm one of the vocal ones. I'd suggest a mailed survery of what fans thoughts are on planned or projected implementations. Not sure if THAT would work but you'd at least get a higher base percentage of respondents vs player base.

you're not going to be able to pull off the core concept in that fashion, the devs can't sit around waiting for the community to threadnaught and rage about what they want in a game.

Most game communities can barely tie their shoes collectively, and everyday the game isn't up and running the IP is losing money.

In a small independant game this might have a chance, something this big it's probably too inefficient.

However, I do believe that you can change some gameplay, dev focus, and other important aspects of the game by utilizing the community (that's usually what closed beta is for), devs should have the flexibility to do this, and the playerbase then gets some input into the game.

I think we have to trust the Devs. They are all Mechwarrior fans, so a little belief in them isn't to much of a push.

While market research, which is what this is essentially, is viable in many aspects of product development (incidentally, the forum is one way for them to look and see if what they are doing is right; in fact, they said as much) it is also true that too many cooks spoil the broth.

I'm all for having my say, giving input, but at the end of the day, we just have to trust in them to use their experience and judgement.

Also we are all a bunch of moaning wee girls. my self included.
If I were them, I'd ignore us, but they don't...
