New thread to discuss BJ-1 related things!, so as not to derail other threads, about other things.

Carrying over a discussion from another thread...

As much as I enjoy AC/2 BJ-1s, it's just so annoying to try and put reasonable damage downrange when:

A. The target starts moving back into cover and twists away the damage.
B. The target is just moving in on you and while they alpha into your face, you have to keep facing them while they twist away the damage.
C. The mech starts overheating because lolAC2heat.
D. It's a light mech and you do piddling damage when you manage a hit, despite spamming rounds, while it runs circles around you.
E. Some combination of all of the above.

I love the dakka. It's absolutely fun. But I feel way more effective with 2xAC/5. And I end up doing more damage. And usually more component destructs. Because it whacks 10 damage per hit out to 600 meters. Every ~1.5 seconds. 137 rounds of ammo usually lasts me an entire, long match. 2 MLs for backup. Never overheats unless I really have to brawl with all my weapons. XL225 and 2 (or 3?) JJs.

Honestly, with the stock weapons build for me, the AC's are there to distract and annoy, the medium lasers are the real threat of the build.

Advantages of the AC 2's are it can fire from a distance with minimal clue as to where it was fired from, make an annoying sound when they hit and distract some enemy assault from making mincemeat of one of your buddies, and can be stagger-fired for optimum irritation. The stagger fire is also handy for securing kills :D

Another thing to consider is that you can hold down the trigger for however long you have the target in your sights and have a nearly continuous stream of damage banging on their mech, other ballistics, machine guns excepted, just don't do that and encourage a peek and shoot gameplay, giving your enemy a reprieve of sorts.

Yeah, but I feel like the AC/5s trade off a little of the suppression ability for a great increase in killing ability. I'd much rather kill something rather than annoy them away. Or not annoy them enough that the enemy keeps on killing their target. Especially if that target is me. ~1.5s RoF for a volley or ~.7s for stagger fire isn't anything to scoff at either. I wouldn't want to even try to face tank something like that if I'm trying to fight something else.

Plus, I can kill things without overheating.

Agreed on all points said, AC 5's have no real comparison to AC 2's outside of fire rate. I'm not fond of all the sacrifices required to run dual AC 5's myself.

tried plugging your build into smurfy, how much armor?

BJ-1(C)

Oddly enough, now that you have a Smurfy's link, I'm positive actually have 3 JJs in the build, since I know the armor value is at 240. It's not the best armored, but it's not underarmored either. I remember CT was at 36 and legs were at 26. Or something. It's probably better to keep that armor or change out one of my JJs for more ammo, but the extra half ton of ammo wouldn't change a whole lot for me; I can come close to running dry a lot, but actual instances aren't too common.

Also, kept the MLs in the torso, in the case that somehow only the arms got ripped off.

It's hardly brawly, but then again, it's a reasonably small-ish sized, agile mech, so with decent positioning and play, the armor holds up to when it's needed at the end of a match. But that's just my playstyle, so mileage may vary.

On AC2s, however, I had what was probably my most enjoyable face-stomp loss. Mining Collective, while my team was getting rolled below me, I was chasing around a Mist Lynx on one of the upper platforms, just hammering away with the ACs. We chased each other around one of the towers for a good three minutes, but he was always on the losing end of the trade. Good fun, and I'm sure I was actually top 3 in damage on my team. Oh yeah, and he lived after getting a lot of armor and at least an arm blown off, because my team folded fast enough that the rest of the Lynx's team were then able to turn their attention to me.

Mine's been the same right out of the box. It's been my favorite build with the BJ since.

Was reminded lately of when I first got the Arrow and tried to fit a BJ-1-ish loadout on it.

ARROW

this was way before quirks and I distinctly recall playing it on Caustic. It was way too hot and ran out of ammo fast, but was amusing.

but anyway, I'm curious of peoples experiences using a AC 10 in place of the AC 2's. I believe I tried the LB-10X, but it was kinda crappy at range and was largely ineffective most of the time. I dont recall ever trying the AC 10.

something like this mebbe
BJ-1

think i'm going to putz around with both builds today :D

I ended up dinking around with only the BJ-1 today, trying the AC 10, 4 med lasers, 4 med pulse and AC 5, the Champion build and Champion build with gauss. AC 10 was surprisingly meh, not used to projectile speed with AC 20's so missed a lot with the Champion build, and got WTFBBQroflstomped very often so I did pretty terrible. Went back to 2 AC 2's, 4 med laser and started performing better and winning matches and all was right with the world again :D
