New MG mech? The Timberwolf!! It can mount four of these bad-boys and back them up with SRM's that barely have any negative quirks!

I ran 3 Machine Guns, one U-A/C5 and one Large Laser for leveling one of my Enforcers. It worked well enough for a mediocre mech like the Enforcer. I don't remember which variant it was, the one with four ballistic hardpoints.

You should master a chassis first before moving on - but I need to correct you on a point: Clan 'mechs are not actually much more expensive. They look more expensive, but the final cost for a fully upgraded Inner Sphere 'mech is often comparable to a Clan chassis - nearly always if you're using an XL. The reason for the difference is that the Clans buy most of their upgrades up front (they only get to choose Artemis) and the Inner Sphere upgrades "after-market.
As an example, the Shadowhawk Build I used in the Phoenix tournament is almost the exact same final cost as the Stormcrow Prime - in fact, the Shadowhawk is slightly more expensive. Of course, if you take a smaller standard engine, like a DakkaCrab, you're considerably cheaper than a Dire Wolf Prime - but a cookie cutter brawling Atlas is only about one million c-bills cheaper, because of the larger Engine.
So the moral is: don't be intimidated by the sticker prices of Clan Battlemechs; they're really about the same price as an Inner Sphere chassis after upgrades.
