Lo and Behold!

I suggest that PGI hires people who would impersonate some of the great and famous heroes, leaders and villains of the Battletech lore. Both IS and Clans.

These lucky few would then get to play sponsored by PGI in some way, they would most likely pilot Hero or Champion mechs, and they would interact with players on the battlefield. Their actions would be recorded, and a news stream about their exploits would be visible in-game and on the MWO website.

In this way, their legend would grow, the game would have more fluff and immersion, and PGI would have the ability to in some small way steer the game.

They could also serve as battlefield testers, voice of the people, and have hands-on experiance of what is and is not OP..

They would be strictly forbidden from breaking character, and should be well versed in battletech lore.

To make it all more realistic, they could immediately be awarded command in any drop they make, and could issue real-battle orders.. actually leading drops in CW..

P.S.

I leave it up to PGI to figure it out if these people would be regular players, deticated players with paychecks from PGI, or one hero would be played by multiple people in shifts or whatnot..

I just think this could do wonders for immersion, fluff and general marketing.

This sums it up.
Hiring them for money definitivly ain't worth it since they could hire another programmer instead to make maps or something else.
I wouldn't follow their orders because i'm a weirdo who goes off on my own to do my own thing.
