Let me hear your story.

1. Why do you still play this game?
For example: for the love of the franchise.

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?
For example ECM re-design, balance problems.

I'm curious.

Hear ya out

Keep it short as possible.

Thanks and keep it civilized

Edit: please keep it up. Perhaps we can even link this topic to Russ. Keep your answers short so he can scroll through it. Thanks!

there is no other BattleMech Computer Game - and the money sinked into this game is a good motivation either

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?

yes - the first did last for almost a half year - start shortly after the HSR inclusion - but i was already upset because of ECM
There is no really improvement of game play so you didn't miss much if you make breaks - ok your ability detoriates - but its nothing you can't gain back in a couple of days.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?

a lot - everything - nothing

1) I like Battletech and the art is great. The stompy pewpew is fun at its core. The only thing that might upset me is that I keep thinking the game can still be a lot more than what it is.

2) I take regular breaks. Sometimes I find something else to do or I run out of mechs to grind or the client just craps on me and won't let me into a match for 2 months.

3) Too broad. Babysteps would be better. They probably should review rewards, hire more artists to pump out more cosmetics to add to rewards/prizes and not just to sell, seriously fix the new player experience, help me find where my modules and engines are on the 80+ mechs I have, move the faction chat to all menus (especially mech lab) so we can chat with faction members anywhere in the game (add faction chat in regular games too so you don't miss out). Sell that freaking Cyclops already.

1. Because it is fun.
2. Yes because I almost always 2 man and my bud is military so he gets busy and I take a break.
3. They need better tutorials and a bigger team. Balance is actually pretty good right now with just a few outliers. For example clan vs is isn't that far off aside from the timber and crow. CW map is more a reflection of where the big teams are and politics.

1) Battletech has been a big part of my gaming life. MechWarrior 2 was my first 3D computer game and it got me hooked. Once I made the connection between that and the cartoon, I became even more interested in the Battletech Universe. It got me into table top, and I have helped contribute to the MegaMek development team to make the universe accessible to more players. I feel that MechWarrior Online is a great modern adaptation of BattleTech/MechWarrior. It reminds me a lot more of MechWarrior 2 than any of the other previous MechWarrior games.

2) Sometimes I get burned out. I go between this, World of Tanks, and other hobbies. There hasn't been anything happening to the game yet that would turn me off completely.

3) I would like to see a full critical hit system implemented. For example, engine, leg, arm, and gyro damage should have an effect on a 'mech's performance in-game. Perhaps partial critical hits on weapons can have certain effects. For an example, a critical hit on a large laser may have a chance of knocking out the weapon, or it may just run hotter, or do less damage, or it might even overload on the next firing due to a damaged capacitor and damage its mounting location.

Had a raging nerd-***** over battle-tech since MW2/3. I actually think the game is good too, although I've had a LOT of fun with bad games over the years.

I'll take a break of a week, then come back in hard as hell for a couple.

Easily; take a note from Valve and let the rabid die-hard playerbase generate content for PGI. Create basic map tools, and your work will be rewarded several-fold. I've played enough niche games like this to know that SOMEONE will be a huge enough nerd to make good maps and content for the game. Hell, people are making plenty of good guides on the forums right now. Implement that in game! Documentation is abysmal!

Don't listen to IS folks QQ'ing too hard about clan mechs being OP. They are well-balanced, or in my opinion, a bit lop-sided in the IS favour, given pure meta mechs are used. But that's another story. Just be careful and cautious with balance changes. People will make fusses no matter what; I mean for goodness' sake you have several cases in game of people accusing others of hacking! These are the kinds of people that will be most vocal for unnecessary changes!

tldr
I like this game, and will continue to play it, because I find it good and I am a big fan of BT. PGI, make it possible (hopefully easy) for users to generate content such as maps, and avoid radical reactionary balance changes!

1. Why do you still play this game?
I love it. Its the right balance for me. Plenty of scope for customization, not too twitchy and a reasonably high time to kill. I like the fact I can jump on for a couple of games if I have a spare 20 minutes. Plus what's not to love about giant robots.

2. Do you take regular breaks? If so, why?
Yes, I take breaks and play other games. But always come back to MWO as its just the right balance for me. Its not that I get board with MWO, just some other shiny will present itself and I will have to have a go of it.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?
My main thing would be to have drop ship mode outside of CW. CW is no good for me at all. Queue solo, wait 15 mins and get ROFL stomped by a 12 man. Queue with a few friends from my unit, wait 10 mins then get ROFL stomped by a 12 man. Its the wait that puts me off all the time. In the time I have one crap CW game I could have had half a dozen fun PUG or group games.

New player experience, the game needs new blood. Most of my friends couldn't get over the learning curve.

Make the smaller maps 8v8 or even 4v4 for new players.

Have new players only play other new players for first 100 matches.

At the end of some set of achievements give them 3 variants of a mech and some premium time so they have something to lvl. Once they get used to premium time they won't want to go back to normal.

Combat fatigue. Also got all the mechs I wanted to pilot and the next mech I could possibly want comes out in August for C-Bills.

CW needs to be improved and be less exploity. Polish required, especially regarding collision and JJs. ECM and LRM reworks. Passive Radar, rear view camera etc...

1. Why do you still play this game?

I've gone off it lately. Combination of factors to do with being busy at work, terribly oversized mechs getting released, burnout, lack of meaningful goals in MWO, other items.

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?

Effectively taking one right now, the forums are still fun though.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?

Game needs more depth in general, more things to get excited about.

1) Playing BT since second edition (Warhammer in the cover), and piloting mech since MW2.
Believe it or not, MW franchise is the only multiplayer game I ever played since mw2.
So, I suppose I'm here because I like sitting in a cockpit.

2) Quite every day. I stopped a couple of years during mw4 (I never liked so much mw4).

3) PGI would improve its own game making closer to BT.

BIG ISSUES:

a) ECM redesign ('cause ecm jesus box is just ridicolus)

b ) Actually LRM system is just annoying and we really need to redesign lrm, I think. Maybe double its missile speed too.
(with current account I've been lurmed to death 4 times.... in 5000 matches... so figure...)

c) ELO MM is ridicolous.
MM should care about Battle value or, at least, team tonnage.
Someone could say battlevalue is a bad system, even fasa said it is unbalanced.... BUT what we have now is even worse.

1. Why do you still play this game?
It's a Battletech game.
It's not a twitch FPS. Gameplay is a bit slower and more strategic.
Overall, better teamplay and people are more mature.

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?
Not really. Except I have too many other tings to do.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?
Make LRMs usefull again. Not just boating.
Reduce high damage pinpoint alphas and boost mixed loadouts to be a bit more effective.
Take out the 1:1 ECM:ECCM/BAP system and let ECCM/BAP counter all ECM in a radius depending on the number of enemy ECMs active.

Because stompy mechs with chickenlegs and arms and laz0rs in a somewhat realistic setting. Not those unrealistic fast paced mech action.

Yes, mostly blame Gabe xD

Currently a bigger break because of Planet Explorer and Life is Feudal.

I'll play along.

1. Why do you still play this game?
I pop in from time to time.maybe a few games a week, sometimes not for weeks at a time.I guess the nostalgia in me keeps hoping this becomes a "battletech" game instead of just Call of Doody:Robot fighting arena edition.
Also,It's the only mechwarrior/battletech-ish game in town right now.And pgi knows it.

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?
Yes,see above.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?
How can PGI improve?
stop charging ridiculous prices for robots.(I know I'm as much a part of the problem as anything, because I buy robots.Mainly because the grind to get said robots with as little as I play would be ridiculous.Yes,I see the inherent hypocrisy with that stance.)

How can the game improve?
lots of things.
sized hardpoints, dynamic reticle dependent on current movement and heat variables(among other factors),a reworked heat scale, penalties dependent on heat level.....
I could go on,but sadly these issues have been discussed into the dirt on the forums.PGI either lacks the talent and insight to make it happen,or they just don't care and would rather continue to pump out over priced robots instead. My guess would be a little bit of both.

I"ll bite:

1. Why do you still play this game?
I don't, I just popped in to have a look at the new event.

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?
I got bored with the game. It's far too too reliant on grinding instead of creating a fun experience.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?
Most people here would disagree with me here, but the game is too much of a arena shooter. It's too far removed from the source material to be enjoyable for me.

1. Why do you still play this game?
Because i love the flow of gameplay (not too fast, not too slow), the look of the mechs and the teamwork potential. Also there is a high chance (for me at least) of epic, balanced matches (about 1/10). It might not seem like much, but I've played a lot of other MP games, and epic matches are a lot rarer.

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?
Yes, i often take breaks of about a week. The grind sometimes becomes unbearable, expecially when you get a streak of bad or dull matches.
Also, sometimes the rewards feel too low, not worth the time and effort.
It feels very bad when you pull off a great game (600ish damage, lots of kills and assists), and get rewarded around 100k.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?
A review of the heat system (lower alphas a bit, please?) to extend TTK, and some tweaks to the reward system (please, no more good games getting low rewards. if we get an awesome match, let us get awesome rewards) would hopefully greatly enhance the game experience.

Also, make the game more complex: add objectives, AI tanks, infantry, real air support. Give the gameplay a greater scope. This would take a lot of time, and i hope it will be added sooner or later.

Balance-wise, i think we are almost there, just some minor tweakings are necessary on the best clan mechs (TBR and SCR) and on some IS quirks (50% cooldown quirks, i'm looking at you).

ECM and LRMs could use a major rework to make them more intresting, but i have no problems with them right now.

Actually quite a difficult question to answer. I love the building and customisation of mech builds and then testing my new creations out on the battlefield against other players. There is so much variety that boredom can easily be staved off.

The skill ceiling is also remarkably high. In most FPS games I will reach a performance peak, and then after that quickly become bored due to a lack of challenge. Even after hundreds of hours of gameplay I still can't dominate the enemy like I would in another FPS.

View PostSarlic, on 27 March 2015 - 02:15 AM, said:

Yes. Took one after the ECM update, and then another after the initial clan release. Both situations led to pretty awful gameplay for a long time.

View PostSarlic, on 27 March 2015 - 02:15 AM, said:

PGI need to be more willing to make major mechanical overhauls. Sensors and ECM are examples of systems that could be a lot more interesting.

Maps need to be function first, aesthetics after. I might notice the beautiful artwork and modelling during my first few drops, but I will completely ignore it after by the 100th.

Be more transparent. Give us detailed mech performance data that the community can analyse for perceived imbalance issues.

And speaking of balance; be prepared to make more aggressive balancing decisions. Don't be afraid to upset a small number of the community at the expense of overall balance. Also be faster about it! Often it takes 6 months plus for you to get around to fixing obviously broken mechs/systems. Quirks were a great step forward.

man, there is some sunk cost fallacy going on in this thread

1) It's fun; building mechs is fun, mech combat feels good and well realized

2) I go weeks without playing much at all, and sometimes I play quite a bit. With the frequency of events lately I feel like I've been logging in just to play them.

3) I have as many opinions w/r/t balance as anybody, but what I'd really like to see are more maps and a CW game mode that doesn't suck (excited for this 4v4 mode that's apparently being worked on.) I also think they could probably do better by shifting their purchase structure toward cheaper individual purchases and put less emphasis on packs; on the other hand who knows, ************* seem to love their expensive mech packages
