alt-tabbing back into the game is a big culperate for some (one time my window was all black, and I alpha'ed someones ass when I clicked the window)

also, this game can be oh-so-tedious. after the long searching\loading wait, people want to click all the buttons!

It's to see how hot your mech goes with one alpha. I do it sometimes too but I make sure that I'm not shooting my teammates.

It happens every time you click in from alt tabbing.

Why test in the testing grounds when you can test it on a teammates' back in a live game?

:D

Tbh, I think most of it is just because you can, its going to be a while usually before you get to use em in a fight, so like myself.. just to hear them go pew pew, or to test how hot they are ect.. When you're too lazy to run through the test ground.

Sorry but if people return into the game by that more than one time, they are just stupid.
There are multiple proper ways to do that without triggering a shot:
- alt-tab back in
- click on the MWO Icon in the task bar.
- if you are not intellectually capable of doing those two, then bring up the map before tabbing out

There are however moreless justifiable reasons for firing weapons:
Everyone tinkers around on builds every now and then. Or plays a new mech or one that he/she hasn't played in a long time.
And then there are differently hot maps.
All this considered, one can easily feel the need to really test weapon heat development at the beginning of a match while there are no enemies in sight yet and things are calm enough to actually concentrate on a couple of shots to get an impression.

Of course they should not hit other people when doing so or endanger others to run into their laser beams.
Then, again, there are stupid people. Many, many stupid people.

well i test fire sometimes at the match start... but i shoot the ground or some walls in a corner

why?... testing and noting heat build up (i keep forgetting those for each of my mechs... tnx to quirks)

@Paigan, it isnt that simple. Somtimes I will maximize MWO(usn a multitude of methods), and I'll get audio with no video, or some other weird glitch, like floating cursors, or strange window borders. Clicking on the program (even if I cant see) fixes it.

Like other have said, to test heat on a mech/new build/mech that just got those heat skills/etc.

Just don't walk in front of it when i have it pointed toward the ground or sky and there should be no reason for anyone to care why i'm doing it.

I cry BS that this is why everybody that test-fires their weapons does this.

test-fire for alpha (I never see anybody test fire an "alpha" (one button or the other, but not the alpha) - and shouldn't pilots ALREADY know this from playing how many matches?
test-fire because they can (most likely)
alt-tabbing back in (not as common)

I don't think that this is the explanation for the majority of weapon firing at the beginning.
Also, I fail to see why you absolutely must maximize and click the application when the mech is running with weapons ready to fire.
Maximize the game once before and leave it maximized (or do you mean restore the window? Maximizing means telling the application to span the whole screen, not restoring it to gain full focus).
Or tab out and in again, that also fixes such things quite often. And if not, you can still press the map button to safely click around in the application.
I'm 99% sure that even in your case you can solve the problems in a convenient way without annoying/damaging your team mates.

its done by purpose, because some people are boring at the begining of the match. Just this.
One time, some ****** one shoted me 27% at once from my mech, during first 5 seconds of a match.

How does the intellectually capable, or anyone else for that matter, pull up the map before the match has loaded in?

I know I click launch and then alt tab out to read facebook or whatever while it searches. but I also come back in before the match actually starts (I can see it in the background)

It's called Testing Grounds. Right there on the Home tab, and you get an instant game. Instead of waiting 30 seconds to 3 minutes just to find out your loadout sucks, and gimping your team a player. Every map is available.

I test EVERY loadout I make in Forest Colony. It's pretty simple. Hit 100% throttle and charge the Commando. If you cannot kill it by the time you reach it, change your loadout. If you do, continue at the Cicada. If you cannot kill it before you reach it or overheat, change your loadout. Then proceed to core CT the Catapult, core the Atlas though rear armor in 3-4 shots, drop the Jenner in 2 shots, core the Centurion, core the Cataphract, and core the Awesome before running out of ammo.

For those of us that play many mechs and change builds for science...no, we don't know from "how many" matches. Also, every map's a little different.

I make every effort to hit a wall/the ground, but once in a while, a Kit Fox runs in front of my lasers and despite my pulling off immediately and probably doing <5 damage to him proceeds to hurl epithets at me all match while I do 800 damage and he does 50... <ahem>

Should we do it in TG? Sure. Is that always time effective? No. <shrug> I don't mind anyone else testing weapons, either. I just keep my eyes open and make a good faith effort not to hit anyone when testing mine and ask that others do the same.

I test fire my weapons to
1. Check heat
2. Check weapon locations

I switch mechs a lot and can never remember which weapons are mounted in which locations. Is this the mech with the lasers in the left or right arm? *pew* right it is.

Sometimes I build a mech and just want to get the weapon groups right before I proceed.

I do go through the courtesy of finding a rock somewhere out of the way before testing.

I do go to Forrest Colony on Testing Grounds for a lot of testing (Heat, damage, fire groups, etc...), but if it is a simple weapon assignment only, I'll do it in a match.

Also, occasionally, I might twitch and click a mouse button or accidentally click when moving the mouse to play. Its very rare, but I'm sure stuff like that happens too.

Accidental fire is just prone to happening occasionally. All that needs to be done is an apology and then move on.

This happens very often to me, had a guy from a certain unit get all pissy one day when it happened. I told him "Sorry, stick near me and I will watch your back since I shot it"...that was simply not a good enough answer and he decided to open fire on me for my mistake (since it must have ruined his year they way he reacted) I stated again....

"dude, sorry chill out."

His responsive was two words, censorable here on the forums, here a hint Started with a F and ended with a U.

Even though I should have NEVER done this....I walked straight up to his little cute fox and gave him a nice headshot....was the end of that.

Not saying ANYONE should ever handle it as i did....but it happens so just chill out about it and remember ITS A VIDEO GAME!

I don't get why some people get excited about it. Yes, you can potentially hit an ally in spawn. But when people are obviously shooting a rock or the ground where nobody is, I've seen people get really mad about what is obviously not dangerous.

Story time(s):

This one time I was firing lasers at a mountain side or something harmless; No one was any where near. Some guy on my team sees me doing that and threatens to shoot me if I don't stop. For Teh Lolz of course I kept shooting; Sure enough this guy retreated from the fight, came back, and started shooting the crap out of me. I kept shooting the ground near him (but never shooting him) and he took out something like a torso and a leg before he left.

It was quite lolzy. People on my team were like "yeah...report that guy." I said no, don't. I figure he learned his lesson. The irony was extreme!

Another time someone behind me shot an atlas in front of me, and the Atlas turned around and shot me. I was like bro...wut.

I find that the people who get the most annoyed by these incidents tend to have the most hypocritical reactions to them.
