I think skill trees that branch off and make the user choose a path would be a nice addition. So going one path would give a variety of skills while the other had different choices. Like being able to walk faster in one tree while the other allows you to shoot faster...with other skills as well but just as a point. Would give more variations to mechs...

Many games do this already...the terribad world of warcraft as an example has 3 skill trees to choose. It would only effect top tier skills...

People have been suggesting this for as long as MWO had working forums.

Personally, I think that using skill trees to emphasize role warfare would work nicely. Or even, instead of trees, have a selection of available skills from which you must choose only a limited number.

Yeah, Class specific skill tree, much like Everquest 2's Alt Advancement tree.....several tabs of different abilities and stuff to help boost you up.

Coulda been used instead of quirks as well. Let us as the player forge our own mechs over pigeonholing us into playing 1 type of weapon on a mech cuz thats the quirks it got.

In the original plan for Mechwarrior one of the 4 pillars was Role Warfare which included specialized skill trees for Scouts, Attack/Defense, and Commanders. So before there were even forums the idea existed, it just was shunted to the side and never examined since Closed Beta.

Doesn't take much imagination to make the quirk nonsense go away with this implementation.

What, you mean like this:

Yeah, that was the original plan; the current crap was just a place holder for the above system. Somewhere along the way PGI decided that the place holder wasn't a place holder any more.

Which was a stupid and short-sighted decision, like so many decisions they've made.

<sigh>

This is one of the things that keeps making me sad every time someone mentions it. It's such an unbelievably easy feature to add, and the benefits would be absolutely enormous. It would make mastering mechs fun, instead of a chore.

I've never seen any other gaming company come up with so many great ideas and then just bin them for no apparent reason. And then they gave us "Hill climbing module" instead and called it role warfare.

The current skill tree we have is a joke and I wish I could re~lock some of them after you get the mech mastered. Like fast fire could be locked down as for most is seems to allow higher rate of over heating. Role warfare would change this game 100% correct direction in my view. Lights could chose path of sniper, scout etc. That would be ideal and we could omit the quirk debaclement.

Its a shame really. I know this sheet from closed beta.

Funny thing is, most of the stuff mentioned in there IS already available in the game. UAVs, Airstrikes, Sonar....

It would bring actually bring PURPOSE to skilling tree variants of each chassis because you could skill them different from each other.

Would be so much fun.

Instead we are riding the old clan/IS balance horse all the time BECAUSE WE HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO HERE AT ALL IN THIS GAME

1) we need weight class specific skill trees. At the very least have two skill trees: one for light/medium and one for heavy/assault.

2) we need role warfare skill trees. there should be three different skill trees each with two branches (command/support, strike/assault, and recon/pursuit).

players would be forced to pick a role each game, and could freely switch roles in between games.

role warfare skills would be unlocked using GXP so the system would be monetized by encouraging GXP purchases.

And the ability to float back and forth from tree to tree. As long as you have acquired the necessary points you can adjust them whenever.

And yes, weight class specific for at least the top tier.

I recall a town hall where Russ said the skill tree was something they wanted to rework. But we haven't heard anything about it since.

The focus goes to what people clammer about. Squeaky wheel gets the grease theory. People continue to ask for it then I think it becomes more relevant and more likely.

Because "I" am not some mechcommander pilot in a house stable, I would not want to be stuck as a LRM specialist and being on the short end of the stick when playing ballistic.

I want to be able to play any role any time I want on any mech, choosing the ignore any buff or nerf quirk as I see fit.

the fun is in kitting out your mech as you want. But to be at a disadvantage because of some skill tree sucks.

Current Skill Tree works cause it is generic. Modules can be bought sold and managed. If now my skills to a chassis is locked to only one playstyle, thats going to be horrid. Unless its now MWO:RPG
