XP was not good on release back in 2001, it was with SP2 that XP started being a good and reliable platform (in a similar fashion to 98SE vs 98 or to a lesser extent 8.1 vs 8)

This is very true. I think a lot of people tend to remember fondly of XP with rather rosy tinted glasses. It was indeed not so good upon release - it just had a really long lifespan which gave it more than enough time to be patched up and improved to become a decent OS.

IMHO, Win7 has been the best Windows so far. Stable, compatible, accessible and few nagging issues. 10 years being a tech, Win7 has by far been the best to work with.

The release date quoted by Microsoft is a bit troubling given how much of an early-beta feel the current Win10 preview has. Hopefully a load of enhancements have been made that will be dropping with the release on the 29th of July. I can't help feeling that the release date is awfully close though.

Never mind, we all have a year in which to upgrade for free anyway. I may leave it until I get my new box early next year...

I won't be doing it until the year is up at home. I'll probably be forced to use it at work as soon as it is released.

There's a fair good chance it'll "just work", but with some caveats (IRC Win8 users got some red screens initially with MWO).

Your bigger issue is going to be Win10 drivers for the video cards, as MS put together an updated driver architecture for them, so it could be kinda problematic out of the gate (NVidia drivers were unstable at some point during the Beta or whatever it is called, although it was stable much later).

I would wait a little bit, at least until a service pack comes around (probably a year or two) and it'll be stable then.

I mean, Vista was terrible when it first came out (I still wouldn't use it), but most of that was driver related as you need stability on an OS level via drivers first before things actually stabilize. If you have to adopt early, wait 6 months or essentially "before Black Friday" when making new purchases.

I have been running Windows 10 just as a few others of us have been, we have posted months ago in the hardware forums. Every thing seems to run just fine with Windows 10 TP 64 bit, and I have it installed on several of my computers and a older C2D Intel laptop with a 965 mobile chipset. My gaming rig has it on a standard Hardrive, 7200 rpm and it plays MWO fine with no real issues. I haven't played MWO in several weeks on it, but I and others did testing with 7 and the 10 TP latest builds and I fraps with bench marks with both. I have posted the numbers on those threads back a few months ago. FPS was down just a bit in Windows 10 vs. Windows 7 in most drops. Other then that, I would say MWO runs fine on it, same as it does with Windows 7.

I remember testing Windows 7 builds.... and it was the same thing, once they get the ball rolling with the beta testing it flies from unpolished to polished fast. Not saying this will go the same, but Windows 10 with the last build seems to be going well from what I see on my rigs running it.

The more interesting aspect of win10 is the new display driver model and DX12, which has the capability to remove a lot of the cpu limitations (aka draw call overhead) that plague MWO. Unfortunately, it probably means they'd need to upgrade to a newer version of cry engine, and I'm not sure pgi would want to risk losing backwards compatibility with all those DX9 systems. Imagine the forum whine?

I understand it will be "painful" for some, but a decent graphics card with DX12 should not break the bank. If Dx12 pushes the limits and opens up better graphics, better gaming, I think it would be a mistake for PGI to miss out on the advancements. Sure it will require them to update to the newer cryengine...would this really be such a bad thing if DX12 turns out to be the ****?

Btw... I am one of the guys that is running a xfx 7970 3gb card right now... which means I will have to drop the cash to upgrade to a DX12 card once they come in. Not a big deal, I have been planning on upgrading my card for a while now.

Continuing to support pre-2007 video cards is why we can't have nice things :(

Well, one of several reasons at this point in time.

If finances are this tight; playing computer games and upgrades are the last thing you should be overly worried about

Not sure if anyone else has been getting a notice about a window's icon on the bottom right on their task bar where your time and date systems are at but I have noticed this today while playing MWO. I know that it is free for most users since it was mentioned in talks awhile ago but there is one question that remains and that is about MWO. Will it run MWO with NO ISSUES and will it run smoother?

I sure as hell aint upgrading unless PGI has made sure its able to run on it with no problems. I have my reason's

Please, uninstall windows....
