There are a lot of things you can do.

Kill mechs
Earn C-bills.
Buy mechs.
Elite and master them.
Trying to enhance skills, aiming, sense of position, etc.
Enhance you w/l ratio, k/d ratio, etc
Join a team, drop in CW and give your tag to planets.
Do trolls builds and trolling with them.
Drop in doa mechs and take screenshots and then posting them in the forum and write "look at this, it's not doa at all!"

A lot of fun.

Never have enough of this.

there are big and small differences between mechs that make them more or less uniqe,
from hardpoint to tonnage,
clan IS
equipment limitationts, physical model limitations/ advantages, cockpit differences.

althoguh MWO has yet to make any deeper gamemode, and CW is just a scafolding to hold the form of what could be. it does come down to what you like.
working on big war machines tailoring them to specific tasks and then using them to their destructive effective purpose has always been fun for me. if its fun for you youl stay.

Well if you're only really interested in mastering 1 mech sure, it can be pretty quick but generally people would buy other mechs and move on to mastering those.

The only thing you really need to buy is mech bays and those cost 300 mc which if you spend 7 USD (1250 mc) can get you 4 extra bays.

They give them out during challenges though so you can get a bunch for free too.

You can also get them from CW as rewards from the LP system in place currently.

But you will need more then just one set of mastered mechs if you wish to play in CW. (you need 4 mechs under 240 and above 150 or 160 combined tonnage, depending on Side IS or Clan)

Different 'Mechs are more akin to loadout options in a shooter like Call of Duty than mains/alts in a class-based game. Other 'Mechs offer a different play experience, but -with the exception of lights and maybe some specialized builds like dedicated LRM boats- they don't require you to cultivate or maintain separate skills. Driving anything will help you get better at the game, and being better will give you an edge no matter what you drive.

Outside collecting more 'Mechs, there are also pilot/weapon modules to buy. The right modules can have as much effect on your chosen ride's performance as mastering it did.

New player here - I need a hand understanding something...

For all the long time players here, is this game pretty much over after your first week, or after you master your mech? Or is that the point where you are expected to crack open your wallet an begin the free-flow of cash for the ridiculously overpriced content in this game?

What is there to do after mech mastery? What am I missing??

I have 40 some odd mechs and bays, most of them Heavy and assault class, the most expensive ones to purchase, along with a buttload of hero mechs. Not one single purchase i was obligated to buy and got simply because I enjoy (tho not all the time) the game...You CAN get by just fine without spending one penny, It just makes life easier....OFC the Cbill grind is a bit murderous...even tho I mostly drop in my Hero invasion mechs with cbill bonuses Money is slow coming would be my only complaint.
