I hear what you are saying and I truly hope CW gets more depth than it currently has.
Personally I have a ton of ideas on how to evolve the mode, but that's not the point of this thread.
It may just be fluff, but building on the immersion is about the presentation of the game and giving players more of a personal presence and involvement in the game.

Back on topic though:
A simple trick to building the immersion is to display the menus as interactive objects.
Does anyone remember playing some of those old point and click games where you click an object in the room and your character was scripted to interact with it in some way?

Here is an example of what this might be like for MWO: (And I which I had some pictures or something to put in here)
Your default start in the game is your personal quarters.
A computer terminal is available on a desk - Use it to make your mech selection and, get to your inventory list and use the mech lab interface.
Your avatar is holding a comms device - click on it to open the social window, organise a group, send messages etc.
You have a view port off to one side - click on it to see a particular scene which could simply be a jpg file on your computer or some animated view relevant to the game like the view from a dropship in orbit over a planet or a scene of your homeworld.
A lift door is in the far wall - click on it to change to a view from the lift where you then have a button to take you into the mechbay where your selected mech is, another to go to a briefing room for the standard matches, another to go to a deployment screen for getting into a community warfare engagement.

Little things like this that change the presentation but still achieve the same function gives a greater feeling of immersion that doesn't need to be endless balanced and improves the overall player experience and enjoyment.
Add some cinematic scenes for when the matches are loading and you are deploying into battle...
Refer to this link as an example, why couldn't we get something like this instead of staring at a team list for a couple of minutes?

It's worth doing.

I realise that's a little different to the options for the post but it's another aspect of building immersion.
