I will have to wait for the weekend to check it out. Can't be THAT bad, can it?

Sometime it is, yes.
Not all the time, but not all change is good.
Now I haven't seen the new mechlab for myself yet, nor tested it, but if some of the commentary about it is true, it is one step forward and two steps back.
Edit: E.g. the doubling of the amount of clicks to select a 'mech.

More clicks are better, bro (or something).
Seriously, though...is it that bad?

Mech selection however.... jesus, it's frustratingly bad. Too many mouse clicks needed, the previous method of showing all owned mechs in a weight class and clicking on the one you want was, to me, MUCH better.

Agreeably not all change is good and not all change is bad. That said, snap judgement on 30 seconds of clicking is hardly giving the opportunity to adapt to the change.

I like the new lab itself but dear god I do not want to spend 5 clicks in a spreadsheet to select a mech. Bring back the wall of mechs and add the new mechlab behind the configure button.

Actually, it's four clicks and some scrolling.
You click(1) on the "Select Mech" tab, it opens to the chassis you currently have selected.
You scroll through the list to find the chassis you want, click(2) to expand that tab, click(3) to select the variant you want, and click(4) "save" ("save"? why "save"?) to make it active.
You can save some scrolling by a fifth click in-between click (1) and (2) if you select a weight class instead of "all".
Edit: Now that I've tested it, the actual mechlab part of it is actually pretty nice. Hideous colours and a lack of borders, but it is much, much easier to work with than the old. So Kudos on that one, PGI.
