How often are there personal challenge? Is it every weekend event kinda thing like WoT has done or just a release/special event kinda deal?

They happen fairly often ,at least one every 2 weeks.

Back when IGP was the Publisher they were pretty rare (6 or 7 in all that time), but ever since PGI has taken full control they are very frequent indeed! I think Body's estimate is quite correct.

Probably averaging 3 a month Since IGP is out of the picture.

Not every event is geared toward every player though. There will usually be a main event geared toward a target group of players. But they'll have a personal challenge along with the main event that everyone can participate in.

Personal Challenges occur nearly every other weekend. Keep an eye on the Announcements forum and the Announcements on the MWO homepage/portal. You can also take a peek at your personal Stats page as the weekend draws near. If you watch any of those locations, you will know very quickly when the next Personal Challenge goes live.

These Challenges are, generally, good ways for pilots to earn bonus C-bills, GXP, Consumables, Mechbays, and even Mechs!

for the last 6 months or so about 3 weeks out of 4 there have been some form of event, they do not always take the form of a personal challenge, in the last 4 weeks there have been 4 personal challenges, before that it was about every 2 weeks, but there were other events as well, usualy offering prizes of some form

Awesome. I just got back into the game after quite awhile and am loving the addition of these personal challenge and the CW. Gives more options to earn c-bills and adds to the fun.

So what's the deal with personal challenges? How do you figure out what they are or how to score points? I just started last weekend and saw the Resistance challenges. I scored a few points on at least one challenge, but I have no idea how I did it because I couldn't figure out how to see what the requirements were for scoring points.

Read the announcement linked on the front page, it will explain in detail what the requirements are for each challenge. There will always be an announcement there before any challenge event. Personal challenges almost always require a minimum match score to get one point, often using one or one of several specific mechs. Leaderboard challenges almost always use their own scoring formula that can be found in the announcement, which is tweaked after every event to plug any existing loopholes and counter abuse.
