I hate to be the odd critter out, but I like having to lead my targets - the thrill of the hunt!

Just keep playing a 3 or 2 ppc build until you begin to get it down. Lowish fps and high sensitivity will certainly make it harder to lead targets. I try to find targets of opportunity that appear to hold still for a long time. I also try to position myself in a way where the enemy's visual position doesn't change much (like peeking a mech that is running straight toward you or at a shallow angle.) Of course, unless you're in a bad spot, you can do some plinking on mechs running in the distance as it won't really kill you if you miss.

i disagree with the sensitivity thing, i play near max sensitivity, but to each their own

one thing i have to add though is that you CAN indeed practice ppc shots in the testing grounds;

what you do is get to a map that has a lot of tall antennas, buildings or spires like mining collective - best if they are narrow so it's harder to hit them, or just aim at a specific window in a building.

then drive as fast as you can passing by it and nail it while you're moving real fast

don't start off aiming at it - just turn to it at full speed and blast it.

It could be that your mouse's base sensitivity is low enough that switching to max doesn't have a big impact. My mouse's default sensitivity is very high, and so I set it to really low in MWO, and that compensates.

yeah i wouldn't be surprised this mouse is crap and the pad i am using for it is also awful, sometimes my cursor gets stuck in place mid match or at least feels like it (mousepad has some white writing on it and picks up dirt too - i think this is a mousepad intended for those old ball mice not optic mice) so i always bumped the sensitivity higher to compensate i guess

one thing is a valid concern though, if your sensitivity is too low it will affect your torso twist no?

i always favored more sensitivity in this game also because of the lasers, trailing a locust's leg is a job for a high sensitivity cursor, and you can manage even the highest sensitivity IMO if you just learn to draw smileys, circles, triangles and squares with lasers in the snow - but some mice might come with a high enough sensitivity like you said, mine is pretty terrible indeed and the reason i use this awful mousepad is that it has a very very nice wrist cushion made of gel

Yes sensitivity does impact torso twist. The faster your mouse moves, the faster you can twist. My sensitivity isn't so low as to impact it. Also, when I need to twist super fast, I also move my mech's legs. Rotating the whole thing quickly, while the torso is also rotating.

The first step is to run a 'Mech with a 20-40% PPC velocity quirk. Otherwise you should be mounting a large laser or AC.

The second step is to prioritize big targets. A PPC is a weapon for sniping heavy and assault 'Mechs by preference, not vainly chasing Spiders around.

The third step is patience. A PPC round is a lot of heat; don't waste it on speculative shots. Wait until you have the target in clear view and try to catch them when they've stopped to fire or are coming around a corner/over a ridge.

And don't obsess over your end-of-match damage scores. PPCs trade DPS for concentrated damage. When you're running a PPC sniper, two shots in the same location are worth four shots scattered all over .

Want to see bad PPCs?
MW2.
Now you feel better.

The PPCs in MW2 were amazing. They looked fantastic for their time, did consistent damage, didn't magically pass through targets a third of the time, and required probably more skill to use well than the ones here to boot.
