Is there a list some where that may explain what everything means that pops up while you're fighting?

protected Light means you are in a light Mech and near a heavy or assault while you and your "protector" are both fighting

protected medium Mech you are in a medium near an assault while you and your "protector" are both fighting

Rgoue Jedi is completely correct. Ironically, instead of 'protected' it should say 'protecting', as it is the Medium/Light mech that is protecting their heavier brethern versus more agile threaths (aka 'Don't leave the Assaults behind!'). That's why it's the Medium/Light mech that's getting the bonus and not the Heavy or Assault mech. :)

Easy way to get some added bonuses, and something that we have all been suggesting: stay close to your team mates and fire on what they fire on.

It's a small incentive for teams to stay together. Lights and mediums are faster and easier to run off so staying with the slow ones requires more deliberate effort, thus the reason the bonus is for the fast guys. That, and people complain the lighter mechs don't get enough rewards.

Just wanted to make a slight correction. SnagaDance is completely correct in saying this bonus is meant to encourage teamwork. However there is a bonus for the big guys too. It's called protect proximity. If you are the assault or heavy which grants the protected bonus to a smaller mech, you'll get the protect proximity bonus. There are bonuses for sticking together, but the names aren't that great.

Ah! Thanks for that tidbit! I thought it was for getting behind cover when being shot at. This is better.
