Why Don't People Use Voip

I would say 3 out of 10 matches its used and makes a real difference. Maybe 5 out of 10 some targets are called like UAVs and other timely info.
When it really gets good is if you have a decent experienced commander. One I drop with pretty regular and he is aces. Its those guys who will make voip a regular part of matches and encourages others to put it to use.
Would be nice if PGI could hash out why so many cannot get it to work, I tell them to crank their mics up 20db and it seems to work for many. It's just real poor at balancing audio.

Since im UK based and the routing is different, plus its dealing with a much higher base ping (110 ish) there is plenty of stuff there to be different. Im pretty certain its not hardware related though.
Only other thing i guess it could be is i use TS all the time and dont switch it off, so since ingame VOIP uses the TS SDK it might be conflicting somehow.. dunno. Would be a dealbreaker anyway if i couldnt use both.

i think the higher up the ELO, the more likely they are to use it and call out targets & stuff

I normaly takes just one or 2 people to start using Voip competently and the others will either follow direction or chime in with useful information.

In my experience, many people tend to be shy about speaking in a foreign language, even when they are actually really good at it. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some people who write perfectly good English on the forums, but are mic-shy in-game. In the game you have your hands full anyway, and that's a nasty time to conjure up those English phonemes which are totally alien to your native language.

I bitched at PGI to implement VoIP for one and only one reason. So that PUGs do not have the excuse of not having it. Now that we have it they can only blame themselves for their stupidity.
(I mean, they'll still find excuses and blame maps or meta or rather their teammates, but still ...)
Why I don't use VoIP?
From my experience of several thousnds matches in solo queue since it was added ...
- 1 out of 10 people who use it actually use it to provide useful information to his teammates.
- Only 1 out of 5 such people is willing to assume command and use VoIP to give directions to his team.
- Only 1 out of 3 who do is actually aware of a thing called comms discipline.
- Only 4-5 out of 12 people in the team are actually paying attention to voice or text chat.
- Only 1-2 out of 12 people in the team are willing to follow the instructions provided in chat.
I.e. 1 out of 150 players is fit for assuming voice command and even if he does there are at best only ~20% people who'll actually listen and follow orders.
In group queue it is usually even worse, because people so often assume that if they managed to form a group it automatically makes them acquainted with said comms discipline and basic principles of organized warfare, which of course it does not.
So ... why should I even bother to try and use VoIP while PUGging if the efficiency of me using it will be well below 5% and the usual reply will be along the line of "go f**k yourself"?
PUGs are gonna PUG. Keep calm and farm them. Now with VoIP.

Reasons people don't VOIP in PUG
- The team doesn't listen, so why spend energy on talking, and a lot of people don't use the same "language" (either literally or jargon wise) so the team doesn't know what the talker is on about
- Half the plan given out at terrible, either by being overly complicated or boiling down to 'shot baddies and don't die', plus people talking can get really stroppy if everything they do isn't listened to
- You have to talk infront of a group of people you have never met before, that's kind of intimidating
- We're PUGGING, who said we wanted to be sociable or work as a team??

Frankly most games that have this aren't even used.

I try to use voip whenever possible, however another reason that some don't, which the reason I will not sometimes, is that my family is asleep when I play. Because my computer is literally right outside my kids' door, there's no way I can use comms and not wake them up: God knows I've tried.

...and yeah, that's another probable cause. A lot of us old(ish) farts can only find time to play when the rest of the family is sleeping, and we crawl into our man-caves. When I play my wife is typically sleeping in the next room. Not the best time to yell ASSAULTS AT CHARLIE FOUR!!! (I play with earplugs, and tend to shout even if I don't intend to.)

- Poor quality.
- Poor bandwith quality.
- Poor microphone from other people
- Mumbling people
- Non english speakers.
I got a $250 headphones with volume on max i can hear people a bit, but most of them can hear me very well and that's what count on calling locations.
And the lastest: nobody listens anyway. Exactly what the solo que is and that is such a shame.

Even worse are the scout mechs that rush off to scout but since they don't have a mic they can't quickly relay enemy troop movements. How the hell do you think you're gonna do your job typing?
Finally because people mute VOIP or play without sound when I try to warn the team about enemy movements they don't know and get massacred waltzing over a ridge like freaking 100 ton ballerina. It's not like I'm chat spamming, unless relaying enemy movements is considered useless and distracting now.
GRRRRRRRR....
Ok... calm now... gonna go find a unit to play with after the contest is over.
It is funny/sad how solo pugs use various things for excuses as to why they are always loosing. They are given the tools they ask for so they can compete and then they do not use those tools but still complain how they are loosing.
They will do and use any excuse to avoid looking for the real "problem", it is themselves, and shift that focus away and say it is because they do not have VOIP, or cannot easily find a group, or easily talk to faction. Now that they have these tools they ask for they do not use them and now have to find other excuses as to why they are loosing and other parts of the game that must change to suit them. Now it is only 4 man groups, and soon enough we will read the next big thing that has to change to suit them.
It will be, again, the solo player in a group game that will be the games downfall.

I do not have a mic
combine these two things, and I get voip messages that are inaudible and cut off, and I dont/can't respond for a repeat, and if I did/could, my ping would suffer worse then it does.
IMO, it is the same issues we have with other things: PGI needs more potent servers to run their online game. It seems anything that loads traffic beyond the minimum degrades performance noticably.
In short, VOIP is a great tool that is IMO about 65% implemented. Boosting server power might bump that by another 20%.

After seeing not many misusing VOIP, I use it now though not as much as some others.
If someone is left behind, people will not always slow down for them, seen it happen even when I tried using both VOIP and chat to ask people to slow down.
Scout Mechs can relay though chat real well depending on how you do it. Get nearby cover for the brief moment it takes just to type the grid like F5 where the enemy is, maybe number like 3 F5, detail can come later. All you need.
Sometimes you gotta turn VOIP off. I have done it once only so far because of someone who spent the whole start of a match sharing his bodily functions and music on it, no words just the sounds.

Age...It gives you the wisdom to avoid VOIP/TS unless you are in a unit you can acutally stand listening to
