I'm not good a German, but when I play with German players during European prime time I leave VOIP on because I can still understand a little bit of what they're saying. Even that little bit is still helpful.

You don't have to talk, but I bet you would understand a lot of what's said if you would at least leave VOIP enabled.

I do listen.

I just don't use it to talk.

For those who worry about their English.

I Say try it. Some of us who are well traveled probably can sort it out and pass on the info.

And for the shy.

You will never get laid with that attitude. Hit on a 100 and so what if only three respond. Its three more than zero.

I leave it on, but I have hearing damage in my left ear and my hearing comes and goes. So some days I can hear fine and others I can hear squat.

Let's call VOIP what it is: another tool in the toolbox. It will only be as effective as the people who choose to use it.

When we didn't have VOIP people screamed bloody murder here on the forums for it to be implemented, saying that the only way teamwork could be achieved in a PUG game is by voice chat and typing was ineffective. We have it now. Has it changed much in terms of gameplay? In my experience, when people use it well it can turn the tide of a game immediately and make the experience all the more fulfilling. However, there have also been times that I've needed to mute select people for being particularly obnoxious. I fear the latter scenario will become much more common when the Steam release finally goes live and our corner of the internet is inundated with general douchiness.

The MWO community is in a funny place. Speaking in (*vast*) generalizations, most of us are previous Mechwarrior/Battletech fans and fit into a few small target demographics. There are elements of the game that are somewhat familiar for people coming into this, and there is a level of normalization among the player base. For example: Is there more than a handful of people on these forums that can say they had no idea what a Battlemech was before they started playing? How about folks that wouldn't at least recognize the silhouette of a Timberwolf? If yes to either of those questions, were you introduced to the game by someone who did know those things? I'd be willing to wager at least one of these three things is true for nearly everyone here. MWO is not a game someone generally simply stumbles into, if only for the sake of the steep learning curve.

However, when MWO comes to Steam and gets the exposure of a front page release as a F2P title, this community is going to change in a big way if for no other reason than the flood of totally clueless new players coming from entirely different gaming backgrounds, potentially dragging toxicity found in other F2P titles to this community. When I get raged at by a 12 year old over coms over some immature BS, that's the day I turn off VOIP in game and stick to TS where I have a modicum of control over who I am talking to.

....call me old but I don't have the patience for that stuff anymore. MWO is where I come to relax with people that have common interests as I do and blow off some steam (no pun intended). I'll be happy with the life a Steam release will bring to MWO, but I think I'll have to sacrifice my VOIP for TS exclusively when it comes.

For now, I enjoy it and I'm glad that VOIP exists now in MWO. Everyone should try and use it if you are able.

I, myself, don't use VoIP to speak, but usually listen. When I play with my buddies on group queque, we use our own TS Server.
The inbuilt VoIP quality is substandard, so sometimes its difficult to understand what is said, especially when someone has a strong accent.

like guys from saxonia i guess.

This thread has existed many times before and I've posted in it sometimes. I can't even remember the details of my own opinion any more, just the conclusion.

Forum search function for the win next time.

Strange. I have VOiP on and my Ping is 40-60. Also Repeatable. What's different I wonder. Could it be hardware or something?

(Not calling you a liar, Looking to find the culprit by eliminating possibilities.)

In all fairness, PGI did say that viop might impact lower end PC's, it did my old system, but the new one has alot more grunt.

I don't own a mic, i'm not likely to get one of these $5 ones as you can tell the people that have as it provides us with mumblese, and white noise, I might buy a reasonable set of head phones later, but not going to be top of the list for a while.

I listen, if the person speaking makes sense will act on it, if they just talk crap then i'll ignore it, I haven't had to mute anywhere near as many as I thought I might, and i'm pleasantly pleased with most folks playing

I've never had a problem with it either. I don't have the performance issues. Never once heard someone just spamming on it. In general, most matches people start using it in PUGs my team ends up winning. There's exceptions, but even those are almost always close matches. Which leads me to think the other side had good communication too.

As for TS - when I'm playing with my Unit, I've got that on too, and just have a separate hotkey for it. Small group, to be fair, so I recognize voices. But it's sometimes nice when we're coordinating small scale. But I'll use both otherwise.

I never turned it off... only in one drop have I heard someone being childish over VOIP.

Him: "I'm being left behind."
Myself and others on team: "Where are you."
Him: "Back here." "I'm the Direwolf."
No coordinates or landmarks mentioned, just "over here" so we try to find him but 20 seconds later....
Him: "Getting swarmed by light I need some F@#$@#% HELP!"
Us: "WHERE!?!"
Him: "Now I'm F-in dead. What a P-o-S team that doesn't listen. I call for help and no one responds &^%$#(( *%*$)&^) *(&%&*$&%&)&^...."
...and then he was muted.

We have had very different experiences then.... If the childish behavior surrounding the "new thing" that VoIP was is gone, then I'll try it again... :)

I have it on and listen and sometimes even talk. And no neither my ping nor my fps are taking a hit from it. Wow? Right?

I am happy it has been implemented. When I'm pugging in CW usually a lot of are actually using it. It boosts your win chances pretty much. And I had to mute like 4 people since it was introduced.

My pet peeve is units that don't use the VOIP in group queue. They for the most part just TS as a small group and don't bother communicating with the rest of the team. Counterproductive to say the least.

I do not use VOIP in the solo queue, because I listen to music if I am pugging.

I'd use VOIP, but I currently don't have a headset with mic (tripped over my old one and snapped the cable) and no money to purchase a new one.

I'm also one of those people who are insecure about their voice.

Because some ppl dont use high end machines. Voip is an additional strain on hardware.
