Yesterday I managed to identify "the plant of many names." It's known as Carolina Horse Nettle, a rather nasty piece of business. If you need to get rid of this darn thing, my suggestion is to use long handled pliers to pull it up with.

Marack Drock has the right idea. Kill it with fire, as with all unholy things!

Keep in mind that fire won't affect its roots, and not only does it have deep roots, it can also multiply growing laterally underground. its one of those plants you truly want to weed out 'root and stem'.

Haha, can't really do those things because I want to be able to plant other stuff, and the M80 would be right out here in the Netherlands (though a border hop to Belgium would probably garner something equivalent). My experience with nasty, hard to root out plants is mainly based on reed, bamboo and brambles.
