I was just playing around in the new mechlab, and noticed i could squeeze ferro on it.. But when i clicked it on, I noticed it only free'd up 1.33 tons. Does that sound right to you? I could swear i have some other mechs, that ferro free's up a lot more weight. (ok, not a lot, but 2 tons at least, or i think anyway) Is my thinking off, or does ferro help more on other mechs.

Seams pretty disappointing that adding it, would at best let me add a heat sink (in the engine) and i have 1 slot left that i can squeeze in a 1/2 ton of ammo. Though I will say the thing is running hot, with double LPL's and an AC-10, which almost makes me wanna drop a half ton of ammo, and just cram in 2 double heat sinks into the engine.

I do keep thinking about just dropping down to normal large, or ER large, and using that extra 4 tons for heat sinks. (ferro not an upgrade option at this point)

I'm still unlocking elites, so i will have that heat reduction in a bit.. Guess i will do that before i make any firm decisions. might as well finish leveling it while it has an extra 20% bonus.. Still need that XL-255 to stuff in my spider and start on them :P

But i digress, is ferro just off on the dragons, or am i just not remembering correctly on other models. Also feel free to drop a fang build you like.

Fero gives more of a weight saving the more armor you have, the 1.33 looks about right for the Dragon, put fero on the Atlas and it gives you 2 tones where as endo gives you 5 tones.

that is why Fero is not often used on IS Mechs, if you can have 150% more weight for the same number of slots of course you will go for Endo

Yea, the mech already has endo, but i noticed it had just enough slots to add it. I spent the 300k, and dropped a 1/2 ton, and stuck in 2 doubles. The mech's biggest issue to me was running hot. Figures the first map i drop into is frozen city.. I will say it doesn't have heat issues there.. :P

I was really just curious about fang builds, and if it was calculating, right, as it seams like i should get a bigger boost but i guess not.

*edit, dropping that 1/2 ton, and adding ferro with 2 extra heat sinks, has made a fairly noticeable improvement. Just unlocked elites too, and the mech is working much better..

Ferro Fibrious is more a cost saving measure than a weight saving one. It is crap compared to endosteel, but, once you already have a made mech, it is easier to add armour plating than it is to completely Strip and replace the entire internal structure.

Also why most Clan mechs are sub-par and everyone complains about the Ryoken and the Madcat. They actually use endosteel.

Ferro fiberous gives you, I think, 2 points of more armor per ton but without increasing the armor cap on mechs. If I'm right, 1 ton = 32 armor points. So it doesn't save you much weight.

The only thing I run Ferro on is light 'Mechs that can't really make use of the crit slots, but can benefit from an extra ton of SRM ammo, heat sinks, or a MLAS.

Endo is much better for heavier 'Mechs, though Ferro gives more weight savings, as said, the more armor you have.

well, this is the final build for this mech, and i must say, So glad i added ferro, and tweaked it a bit. With the elite unlocks the mech is a hole new ride. I'm kinda with you Havyek, ferro is something i typically only use on lights, but i do have a couple other builds that use it, The HBK 4G for example, so i guess i can put this one on the list. The one draw back is all weapons are in arms, but other mechs have this issue.

Fang users, give this a shot.. I'm sure with the sale there are a few more of you out their. :)

as again, thanks for the advice

Endo Steel always scales by mech weight. It cuts the internal structure weight in half. Since IS is 10% of the max weight, ES will always free up 5% of your max weight.

Ferro Fibrous trims a small % (different for Clan and IS IIRC) of your armor's weight. Since armor is hugely variable, even for the same weight of mech (unless you always max everything to the nearest half ton), you'll see the weight savings for FF being a bit more variable than those for ES. Also, the weight freed will be significantly lower than for ES.

Endo first, then if there is space you can use ferro to squeeze in a couple of heat sinks extra. 2LPL + AC10 works well with ferro. Using the torso energy hard point will prevent FF being used if you have a ppc but smaller ballistics may free up a bit
