EDIT: I went ahead and bought the Locusts, so this thread is largely irrelevant now! Go figure!

Aey! As a few people may recognize I'm pretty much a pure Clan pilot, but I just got one of the Locusts from Scout Derek's giveaway and, looking at it, I'm sitting here thinking "Herm... got this one, might as well buy the other two and elite it."

I'm not adverse to the challenge of running the Locusts; I started as a light pilot when I first got into MWO, running primarily Ravens with the occasional Jenner; I thought I was so hot because I stuffed 2x ERPPC's into one of my Ravens... yeah, right!

Anywho, I just can't make up my mind. I love these little guys, I frankly think the locust is a sexy little mech, and the animations are damn good too. The thought of zipping around in one of these things, a stray AC/20 from death, only to get behind somebody and drop six small pulses or the like into someone's back sounds deviously delicious.

That being said, I have nothing to put in them. No spare XL's or the like. They're running stock 'till I can afford to kit them out - and we all know XL engines, DHS and the like are NOT cheap...

So, friends, Forumites, Locust acolytes pilots - what say you? Are they worth the investment?

EDIT: I think I posted this in the wrong spot by mistake, would a moderator kindly move it to the appropriate location if so? Thanks!

Loved Locusts in table top, love Locusts in MWO. Cheapest thrills chills can buy!

1V is my classic favorite, but many enjoy the 1E, and even running stock is pretty deadly bugger. Can't go wrong with snagging a Pirates Bane either, adding ECM just makes it all the more fun.

Yeah I caved and bought the 3S(?) and 1E... six small lasers with an XL190 and I just put out 400+ damage. I'm lovin' it! Just needs double heat sinks desperately... after I do that, it's endo and then SPL's! I haven't had this much fun in MWO in such a long time :o

Do it. You won't regret it. I have about 30 mil invested in each of my Locust 1E's. If I could spend more to gold plate them, I would.

Locust is always worth it.

The 1E and 3S are my personal favorites.

To Locust. I'm running the 3V (thanks to 3xnihilo, btw) the 1E, and the PB, and all of them performed very well this last weekend. The 3V is crazy tanky; I've been using it to outsnipe ERML Stormcrows with a single LPL.

Tim,
Agree with your assessment about 3v, it is very tanky. I am running 2med pulse and 2 MGs. Really enjoy it.

Yep 190XL is the only way to fly. Speed is essential for lights, even more for locusts.

I highly recommend Locusting. Then again, if you check my sig, you'll realize that I am very biased.

The locust is the best mech as its unforgiving if you make a mistake.

I've played assault for a large part of MWO until recently when I explored the option of piloting light mechs. I had a stint with locusts but hadn't made much of it during the time I was trying it out.

In a recent group session with my unit, we played all locust and specifically capped, ignoring mechs when we could unless engaged. Of course at some point we had to engage mechs, and I realize I was getting quite a bit of saviour kills due to using machine gun, as it allowed me to continue to fire with no heat penalty, unlike laser and other weapons, i could just hold down my trigger, and as such, it improved my chances of catching the 10 second bracket for Saviour kill, and also Killing blow.

I also realize that its size, or the lack of it, mattered a lot with regards to how often you were engaged in a group fight where you had allies engaging them as well, and how difficult was it for them to track you with their lasers at your full speed.

thus my strategy with using locust, as will with most, would be to only engaged in enemies that are already engaged with one or more (usually two of more is better) allies, particularly if any part of them already had armour stripped. Keep your speed up, go behind when you can, and keep your trigger on your machined guns.

that has given me more c-bills than my assault mech, though with less actual damage output. I encourage anyone to try this mech as unforgiving as it may be, as i invested in it only too late.

DHS isn't all that, used locusts without it except on the E one with 6 lasers. Heck, didn't even use XL sometimes.

I've run a lot of matches through the 1E with both 6 small pulse and 5 medium lasers.

I suggest you try the mediums. The small pulse build basically has to engage to fire; with mlasers you can stand off at 3-400 meters and pot shot all day. Both have the same alpha, manageable heat; and with the quirks the mlasers have the duration of medium pulses.
