Well steam is going to be a big thing for MWO.. a big milestone that will bring in a small brust of increase in number of players, extra cash and loads of negative reivews by thoose who hate the game..

anyway..

i was wondering what possible mechs can be offered as a steam launch?

ideas? guesses??

lets keep possible ones here please (no unseen ones or those which are way out of timeline)

A pack of various champions would be a good thing for Steam newbies to purchase.

Champions, have you seen some of the stock hero builds? The idea is to give people a starter pack of effective mechs that don't need to be customized to be effective.

I rather they just give a complimentary Champion mech for newbies to lessen the grind a bit.

AKA, give everybody a champion hunchback and mechbay for completing their 25th cadet bonus. Even the people that already did so they won't feel cheated.

Should RP/lore it up and give them some beat to hell light that the last pilot got killed in that staggers around like a drunk. :P

Then as the ladder is climbed they get a little better mech every couple levels. Nothing special, but enough to start them out with a light or two and maybe a bright shiny new Medium all thier own for getting out of the cadet ranks.

Despite the whole cash grab thing... I think a discounted pack for steam launch would be a great idea, with one mech from each faction. COMPEITIVE mechs. That way, newbies can get a feel for the faction they would like to stick with, with a mech that isn't powered by badness and regret. If there's only 2 mechs, it will still leave PGI in a good spot to get more business later.

$10 bucks for the lights, 12 for mediums, 14 for heavies, 16 for assaults. Yep. Week long sale, with 1 week of premium time. GREAT DEAL.

Light pack: Firestarter and Badder.
Medium pack: Hunchback and StormCrow.
Heavy pack: Thunderbolt and Cauldron Born.
Assault pack: King Crab and DireWhale.

they need that chameleon still.
50 ton chassis, starts with a 300 engine, jump jets, built to laser boat but with ballistic options, just need a -P varient with a missile slot, or better yet, just add a missile hard point (or two) to the stock 7V, nothing says they can't add hard point types that the mech didn't have after all, just they haven't done it that I know of yet...

the 7W is even canon built for combat with DHS and ER/pulse weapons.

the 7Z is stock like a tiny stalker [2 large, one ER large], this varient could have missile HP added for inflation, and to train pilots on both how to customize, and how to use LRMs and SRMs.
eh? eh?

I like the free hunchback idea at cadet level 25. Maybe offer the player a choice of IS or Clan mech at that point. A bit like pokemon! :D Then they still have a pocket full of C-Bills to utilise on kitting out their new mech or purchase something else. Less chance of spending all of the C-Bills and being left with a weak garage leading to them leaving the game early doors.

What I would suggest are simple, non-overwhelming tutorial videos released along with it (for free) on Steam at the store page to help people get started with all the game features (and please update these as new features come in). Tutorials aren't a fire-and-forget thing for a game that constantly evolves. I don't mean the videos you find in the side-scrolling bar where the promo videos and screenshots are lumped together. They can upload videos as separate content on Steam (Kung Fury).

Enable a limited account reset state where a user can reset his or her account 1-3 times or build some complicated c-bill refund system so that first-time players don't get shafted for the wrong choice on their first purchase.

Set a system check where in a player who has not tried more than (x) trial mechs be reminded that he should probably try a few more mechs before actually purchasing one to make sure it's to his or her liking.

Allow players to:

1) Modify a mech before purchase
2) Take it for a spin in the Training Grounds
3) Take it for a match or three.
4) Offer an MC discount to purchase it after 3 trial runs and/or
5) Check if it has a Mastery Pack and have a note that the user might want to check that out as well.

To avoid abuse you can limit it to 3 tries per day.

Give them Firestarters so everyone with a two-year-long grudge can have catharsis by beating the ever living snot out of a horde of them come launch.

No, actually i'd say hunchie is the way to go for the new guys. 4G maybe, running that AC 20 can be dangerous in anybody's hands. They can just be lucky and put you down after someone else opened you up.

I would like this (I still don't even have my Hunchie 4G yet), but just as a reminder - When the idea of a Cadet Bonus first came in, those of us who had been around before that time, and had obviously more than 25 drops under our belt, had the max amount of C-Bills automatically injected into our accounts, to make it as if we had completed the Cadet drops - For exactly the same "not feeling cheated" reason you mention.

Not that I'd turn my nose up at free stuff! :D

I would go the route of most F2P's on steam with a selection of packs.

IS versions
$10 Intro 1 Select Med or Light Master Pack
$20 Starter 1 Select Light, Med and Heavy Master Pack
$50 Deluxe 1 Select Assault, Heavy, Med and Light Master Pack

Clan versions
$15 Intro 1 Select Med or Light Master Pack
$30 Starter 1 Select Light, Med and Heavy Master Pack
$60 Deluxe 1 Select Assault, Heavy, Med and Light Master Pack

Give them a tanky but agile heavy for completing the cadet bonus. it should be a durable mech, without XL, so they dont get fragged instantly every mech. The heavy class is a good starting point and easiest to handle and get the feel to pilot a mech.

Quickdraw, Phract, TBolt or even a ShadowHawk would work.

They could do IS and Clan steam packs. Tier one mechs for each. I would give them a light a medium and a heavy. Keep them out of assault missle boats for a bit if possible.
