(sold my DD before the quirkening, I'll get another one day)
Just mastered Enforcers and by the Lord Grohl, I've a new favourite!
The 5P 2xUAC/5 & 1xMlas is one VERY effective mech.
Just get in the habit of chainfiring those cannons with a double-tap every 3 or so seconds and you'll be shredding whole lances!

CPLT-K2 "Gauss Kitty"
My personal favourite; fit armour to taste.

Your very first upgrades should be dual heat sinks, regardless of anything else. Playing them stock will be pretty rough, but they get better the more you tune them.
And always build them in Smurphy first, before you spend any Cbills on upgrades and equipment. Will save you a bunch of space bucks to theory craft them first.

Most of my evening was spent trying to finish Elite skills on my last Hunchback, the 4G. I only need about 3,000 more Mech XP on that one and I will be done with them so that I can get all of the Mastery stuff. Should be able to finish that up tonight, then spend most of the evening switching back and forth between my favorite Hunchback and my sweet new Jagermech.
From the two Jagermatches I played last night I learned the following:
- The stock build actually seems okay, but double heatsinks are needed and I should probably swap the A/C2s for a third U A/C5
- Dakkadakkadakkadakkadakkadakka!!!
- Peeking is a very different because I need lots of time on target to hurt them
- While sitting there blazing away, other enemies see me and light me up
- The Jager has cute, thin armor like a 45-tonner
- Dakkadakkadakkadakkadakkadakka!!!
It's a blast so far, I will post maybe one more time to report results once I have a good number of games under my belt with it.

For the record, there are between 5 and 8 builds that run well on Single Heat Sinks, or don't need Doubles. Other than that, every build in the game requires double heatsinks. It's gotten to the point where most of us automatically get DHS before we even realize what it is we are building.

Yes the only real drawback on the Jager is it's paper thin armor and huge side torsos. As soon as someone starts banging away at you, you need to fall back and reposition. I still love engaging Jagers one on one with my Cataphracts, they don't stand a chance.
Better off playing it as a striker/flanker, or just stay close to the assaults and play fire support for your assault buddies. They'll take most of the focused fire for you, and you can lay down some serious hurt in return.

Stock Jagermechs mount less than half there max armor, but you can fix that in the Mechlab
if you are currently running it stock except for DHS then I would look carefully at what compromises you want to make, ideally you want near max armor and a lot more ammo, absolute minimum I would recommend is 2 tonnes per UAC5, it is not unusual for me to run out of 3 tonnes of ammo for each UAC5, also it may be worth swopping the Fero Fibrus Armor for Endo Steel internals, for an extra 2.5 tonnes of space,
you mentioned that you were considering running 3 UAC5 build, if that is what you want to do I would recommenced something along the lines of this:

the upgrades and additional equipment will cost about 3 million cbills

Yeah, I should have waited to buy it so that I had the additional 1.5M C-Bills to go to DHS right away, but I was just so excited... Will make this my next spend.

And thanks, I'm going to work on my playstyle with the Jager; it definitely requires that you learn the art of retreat and re-position!
And as always, it seems like I will often benefit from staying with the big boys, so I will work on that as well.
Thanks for the posts!

Holy crap, I didn't even notice that the stock build has ferro-fibrous but not Endo. Thanks for pointing that out!
I will add that to my list of upgrades/changes as well. I could also drop the 2 MPLs to MLs, which would buy me a little more tonnage for armor/ammo... that bears thinking about too.
Edit: I just took a close look at your at your recommended 3 UA/C5 build.. the maxed out armor on torsos and arms is sweet. And 8.5 tons of ammo? Damn! Hopefully I can work to survive long enough to burn through all of it

This has it's origins back in Tabletop. After the Inner Sphere went stupid, and started nuking itself apart, they lost the ability to manufacture Endo-steel virtually everywhere. FF armor was still easy to manufacture, and can be done on land (Endo-Steel can only be manufactured in zero-G environments, and those facilities were destroyed during the First Succession War). So it was the easier, and cheaper to make option for weight savings.
Not to mention that unlike FF, to install an Endo-steel skeleton on a mech, you have to literally strip the whole thing down, and re-build it from the ground up. It's very expensive, and only a few places in the IS could make it after they rediscovered how to do it. While FF only requires you to remove the armor plates you currently have on your mech, and put the FF ones.

with ammo I aim to run out occasionally, if you never run out you are wasting tonnage on something you are not using, by the same token, if you run out more than about 1 game in 3 you are probably not taking enough, experience has taught me that for most Mechs 3 tones per UAC5 is best for me (I will use all the ammo about 1 game in 5), you may well settle on a different amount but only experience will tell you that.
I am not sure weather or not you have figured this out, and I probably should have mentioned it in my earlier post but if you hold the trigger down the UAC5 fires at the same rate as the AC5, it is only if you tap fire that you can get the "double tap" second shot, but if you double tap you stand a risk of jamming.
if you are not usualy using the double tap you may as well swap the UAC5s for standard AC5s and save 3 tonnes

Just remember with 3 UAC5 and a single double shot alpha you already did 30 damage. That's enough of a salvo for you to seek cover right away if they see you.
So your peek-a-boo style is wait for all UAC to unjam, peek out, double pump, hide again.
Just think of it as switching to 3 shot burst mode on your rifle.

But the Cataphract has one too, contains the Ilya (that I use with 3 AC/5), the 4X (that I use with 4 AC/5) and another variant that I can't remember off the top of my head. So it's a matter of whether you prefer a tankier mech with lower guns or a slightly more fragile one with the guns on periscopes

It's also a very different type of game. I love that each weight class is it's own mini game.
