Anyone hear anything about this?

My brother said Sony bought the rights and Harmony $old is out. For the upcoming movie/show, which is supposed to be a series.

Is he smoking my crack stash or is this legit?

Unlikely... Sony is no less the scrooge when it comes to milking an IP.

Quote

“When the rights to ‘Robotech’ became available we jumped; Mark and I knew it had what big movies in today’s world must have if they want to grab everyone: insane visuals and powerful themes,” said Nunnari. “The characters in ‘Robotech’ wrestle with both the destructive and redemptive powers of technology; nothing is more relevant today than that.”

http://variety.com/2...ime-1201460191/

This quote sums up much of what is wrong with Hollywood for me. It's like they're consulting some great Wheel of Time to see when the old franchises are either available for purchase or when it's time to make them relevant again. Because to hell with original ideas, let's just recycle the old ones.

"Well, we need some kind of universe that revolves around the dangers and benefits of technology. It's a very controversial topic these days. I read it in Time Magazine."
"Should we get some creative writers in here? We could create a new sci-fi universe or something."
"Nah. Robotech will be available soon. Let's just grab that."
"Great. We also need something with religious themes, maybe something that questions whether science has all the answers. It's going to be the next big thing."
"How about... Avengers 3: War in Heaven!"
"Close enough. Let's grab lunch."

From the sounds of various articles (here, here, here, and here) in addition to the Variety article, it sounds like HG is still in control of the Robotech franchise as a whole, and what Sony has is essentially a license to produce a series of Robotech films (which Sony acquired from Warner Brothers after Warner allowed their Robotech film project to languish).

Yeah, I can't see HG relinquishing control over what is essentially a very effective IP/Copyright squat.

If they didn't have companies to sue that even THOUGHT about using anything remotely similar to the mechs or names from Robotech, they'd have to go back to their old business of kicking puppies and selling kitten fur coats.

Not likely. If Sony makes a good movie then there is also toy rights to think of. Who ever own these will not want to see their mechs show up in a different title. Also someone could make a Robotech game based on the movie, you know like they did with Avatar.

Its Sony. They are the ONLY movie studio that denies Emagine the right to give "Valued Customers" like me a free pass to any of their movies EVER!

i imagine how hilariously such a court might look like
a few serious jurists gather together, suits, 'your honour', books of laws etc and all those serious people compare one mech drawing against another and argue if it's the same model or not; 'but look at the hull of this 'marauder' and at its top cannon, your honour! it's clear that they borrowed the design belonging to my client!'

Old news. The "movie" has been in behind the scene talks for a while. Last i read anything it was indefinately on hold. That said, HG still owns the rights as i understand it and makes them even less unwilling than they were previously to entertain unseen/reseens. Go back through a town hall or 3 for russ' comments on the hg stance

Movie rights is legit, was a rather large amount of millions

I'm not sure if it encompasses merchandise, but basically you can wave bye, bye, to any more unseen, because sony will not want models of Zentradi command pods competing with Marauders, any more than HG would endanger phat loot deals being cancelled
