So I was going to wait to build a tier 1 drop deck with the potential quirk changes incoming, but I have a bunch of cbills and the thunderbolt went on sale so I can start there. My question is, what variants and builds are people using. I did look at the metamech stuff, but I would like some more opinions, thanks.

TDR 5SS is the most important variant over all. Even after the last round of Nerfs it is still a great mech to work with.
ERLL Spam for Boreal
MPL Spam for all other maps

5SS is the best Thunder, it's one of the best mechs for close range fights with 7 MPLAS.
9SE is a close second, one of the best mechs at mid range poke wars with 3LPLAS.
9S still works decently enough in Boreal and reasonable in Grim Porttico wiht a couple ERPPC, but it's definitely the worst of the 3.

I can generally get a lot of work done with the TDR-5S and 4 LLAS too.

9S and 9SE also come with double heatsinks and some virtually useless equipment you can sell, making them especially good deals with this current sale.

Three Thunderbolts, one Blackjack-1X = 240 tons

E.G.
9SE/5SS/5SS + BJ-1X
or
9S/5SS/5SS + BJ-1X for Boreal/Grim Portico

More meta is not possible. Builds what Brizna posted.

Just look at the quirks of the 5SS. 25% range, 15% heat, 15% cooldown for all energy weapons. The only quirk for the Mpl is an extra 25% range.

I have 4 5SS with different loadouts:

- 4 ER Large
- 2 Large, 5 medium
- 2 Lpl, 3 medium
- 7 Mpl

Very nice writeup, it boggles the mind the amount of information we need to carry in our heads to suck at this game

You mean to not suck right?

And yes theres a reason they dubbed this game a "thinking persons shooter" and why a good portion of the player base is mediocre if not god awful at this game.

Further advice for OP and other players. Moldur gave good suggestions for mechs but raven+stalker, wolverine+thunderbolt, or timberwolf/hellbringer+stormcrow are not the only ways you can go. If you don't have the c-bills or MC to throw into a new dropdeck....

1) Take forum advice as a starting point, not the ultimate answer.
2) Even if the suggested mechs match your playstyle if you learn to mimic/reproduce performance on other chasis, it will get you past the next quirk pass if the quirks change again.
3) Don't feel obligated to use full tonnage. If you have 55 tons and play better with a raven than a wolverine, take the raven!
4) Mechs builds are important, but so is team coordination. If you are PUGging against a 12 man, it will hurt.
5) Remember, have fun! Don't burn out on gameplay.
