Hi all,

I want to have a rough gauge on the popularity of the commander role at launch. Because XP will be limited at the start, roles may have to be decided before hand in order to field a fair combination of player types in a lance.

I wish to use the information gathered here to aid in balancing out companies of lances so that neither too few nor too many commanders will be present in my gaming group. I am under the impression that the commander skill and role is unpopular and wish to see if this poll confirms it.

From my understanding, people who invest in the Commander skill tree can call in air-strikes, artillery strikes, intel sweeps, give directives and have a bird's eye view of the map. This is definitely a niche skill-set and it will be interesting to see how many adopt it.

If you leave a comment, could you please state if you will be specialising as a commander at launch, and the number of people you will regularly play together with as a group (0-11).

Thanks for you help forum!

Hard to say... I picked no for now, mostly cuz I have no clue what the Trees will look like and how the system works

I may be going for Scouting First up, and cause some havoc with the Enemies Electronic Equipement!

Ah, sorry, could the 6 people who have voted so far redo their votes for the 2nd segment? I've fixed it so that you can submit a correct answer in both subsequent questions.

I'm a teamwork nut, I'll do what's needed for my team. The group I'm in should have plenty of commanders. Ideally I'd like to scout, but if that's not needed from me I'll be part of the fire support team.

I'm planning on going command, depending on what the skill trees actually look like in the end. I've got some experience in various MMOs and FPS as raid/squad leader, I (usually) found it satisfying.

nobody will listen to the commanders due to the only ones that usually take that role are immature fools that would rather yell at players that arent doing what they think they should and calling them stupid noobs

That may be true if you were in a random pub match, but in a lance with your guild mates I think a competent commander calling down the shots and the airstrikes might turn the tide of battle.

Are roles just something like a meta? or are roles defined in a definitive way. (ie you roll a pilot who is a commander, and other who is a support, and another who is a scout?)
Can you even make multiple pilots?

You can find more information in one of the dev posts. But basically, roles are both meta and in-game skills. If you spent your XP in the scout skill tree for example, you might have a certain bonus... this does not mean you have to play as a scout in the meta-game sense. If you picked a skill in the commander tree, then you can call air-strikes for example, but you don't have to lead your team even though having invested in that skill set will make it easier to lead.

I hope I'm explaining it clearly. The devs have posted more info on it somewhere in the forums.

I intend to perform the role of scout primarily, but some of the command tree looks like it would cross over very well (the arty strikes, and the proximity alarms for example) so I will probably pick and choose while filling a scout roll.

I didn't vote as I am undecided.

For me it would depend on what a Cicada can carry (I know it isn't much). With the command tree you can at least call in support which would help out your team if used correctly. I am not one for leadership, but I know tactics from previous games.

As for the other questions I am undecided as I am unsure if the last group (not naming names, but they should know who they are) of people I played MMO's with will stick around. A lot would depend if I find them up to snuff here and if they feel the same way about me.

Really cannot vote without more information, especially if it will take awhile to fill out a tree. I might just go Assault to be safe and branch out later when more information is available from other players' experiences.

Totally. One of the things that made me love Mechwarrior 3 so much was being able to not only command your AI lancemates to attack/defend specific targets, but also to pull up the map and tell them to head to that specific location. So you could set up ambushes, fire support positions, etc. Was awesome. And calling in Arrow IV strikes with TAG was fun too, although implemented rather poorly... I'm very much looking forward to playing in the Commander role, way more so than any others.

I won't be doing it at launch, though. I'll need to get a new computer before I can play the game, and it's going to be a long time before I'll be able to do that.

Depends on whether or not the Commander in a lance is taking the role because it gives him an illusion of prestige, or if he's taking the role because he is good at it. Egotists won't get listened to, natural leaders will. And this is not to say that Commander = leader. It's a toolset, just like Scout and Attack/Defend. It makes the most sense for the lance's natural leader to fill the Commander role, but there's no reason he couldn't be a Scout and have one of his "followers" fill the Commander role, so long as he knows what he's doing and is willing to operate as part of the team.

currently I command battles for a clan in WoT. I think if the group comes over here I will continue in the role so picking the CO skillset for me will free up the others to continue being the shooting posse and scouts.

Ideally I will run in an assault or heavy mech to help hold the line or with pushes. As with all things about this game though things can easily change up until we all get into the open beta.

Is the only Command mech so far the Commando? Are there any other Command role mechs available in the BT universe?
