I've got about 10 friends that are pretty big into PC gaming, one of which can and has played FPS games at competitive levels. I've gotten most of them to try MWO and none have stuck around for more than two hours because the game is just really painful for new players and actually punishes them for grouping with a more experienced friend. Poptarting may have driven some people away, but ultimately the horrible NPE, terrible UI, poor rewards, lack of maps/game modes, and generally slow progress have probably been 1,000 times worse for the game than poptarting ever could have been.
I've spent hundreds of dollars on the game and quit for several months twice already. I have been taking a break for the last week and haven't really missed it because there just hasn't been enough progress to hold my attention any more. I don't need or want any more mechs at this point, I want to see the depth of game play that was teased in the first dev blogs and announcements of the game. Unfortunately, I don't think we are ever going to get to that point.
To me it looks like MWO has lost a lot of momentum and burned through a lot of goodwill that will probably never be recovered due to easily avoidable mistakes and pitfalls.
