"My name is Lieutenant Sven Imahara of the 1st Drakon air wing the Flying Drakons. I am the leader of 3rd squadron also known as Spear Squadron. Assigned to the defense of Rasalhague...I am going to die."

Saying the words out loud, I felt like I had just closed a large and heavy door. The mental thud of its closing brought a kind of peace with it at least. I thumbed the voice recorder in my cockpit back on and continued.

"My wingman and I engaged a pair of Clan Wolf fighters that were providing close support to a DropShip in an attempt to draw them away. This would allow the rest of the squadron to freely engage the DropShip and hopefully stop it from making planetfall. I say hopefully because at the time of this recording, I have no idea if the rest of the squadron succeeded."

I got myself shot to pieces and I don't even know if it was all in vain, ain't that just a kick in the gnads?

"The Clan fighters we had engaged up until this point used multiple large pulse lasers to engage at mid to long range. In an attempt to cut down of their long range edge, we closed to extreme short range using a series of bait and switch maneuvers, utilizing the Clanner's one-on-one engagement protocols against them."

It was a good plan, and thinking back, it was some of the best damn flying I had ever done. I got so close to one of them, I was actually able to see the weapon hardpoints on the underside of the fighter. That was also the moment I realized we were doomed.

"The Clan AeroSpace fighters seem to share the same modular design as their Mech counterparts. Despite being the same chassis, this particular configuration had Ultra-AC/20s mounted on it. I attempted to warn my wingman, but was too late. In a single burst, the Clan fighter cut my wingman's Shilone in half. By closing to short range, we had given the enemy exactly what they wanted. My own fighter sustained catastrophic damage to its engine, navigation, and radio systems soon after. I am currently adrift with no idea where I am and no way to contact rescue."

Looking out into the void of space, I couldn't even see the planet I was giving my life to protect. Ahead of me stretched the endless sea of stars. I wondered if this sense of smallness and distance was what the ancient people of Earth felt in the days before the KF-Drive that allowed JumpShips to effortlessly leap 30 lightyears at a time.

"Life support systems are failing. I have little air left. My gun-cam footage is intact and sealed to my fighter's black box. The UAC/20 configuration of Clan fighter has trouble maintaining speed in a left hand turn and climbing, but dives at speeds that far exceed previous intel."

Each breath was getting harder and harder to pull in. I reached into the survival kit between my legs, my fingers closing around the object I sought. As I pulled it out I looked around the ruin of my fighter. The bulk of the wreckage contained my cockpit and slowly turned in a circle. The debris from my armor orbited around it like the rings of a planet. To the right, an LRM pod spun on its axis like my own personal small moon.

"Markings on enemy fighters...are consistent with Clan Wolf's Alpha Galaxy...It is...safe to assume...that enemy DropShip belongs to Clan Wolf commander."

I never liked these gloves they gave us. My helmet feels like it weighs a ton. Just gotta flip the safety off this damn thing. The stars look so close now, like I can reach out and touch them. Something stops my hand. The canopy. I can't flip this damn safety. Flashing lights, why is the console flashing? I swear, if the ground crew put a kink in the fuel line again...

"This...this...this is Lieutenant Sven Ima....Imahara..."

I lean my head forward, the barrel stops me. The void inside it...it's blacker than space. It's so dark. Hard to breath. Gotta finish report. Commander always gets mad when you don't conclude reports properly. This barrel looks huge...why is it so deep? Gotta finish.

"Over and out."

It's so quiet

Good stuff Bill. It'd be awesome is Sven comes to in the infirmary of a Wolf Clan War/Jump/Drop ship...

Sadly Sven bit the bullet (bask in layers of that pun for a bit) this was just a one off piece I wrote up at work. Graveyard shifts are dull

See, THIS is exactly the kind of stuff that would make MWO fluffy and immersive...

If mechs and equipment had actual descriptions followed by pictures, spinning wireframes, and short stories like this that utilise them... it would be soooo immersive..

Great job BIll Bullet!

I commend you good sir!

Yeah I read this without seeing what the actual name was, lol. It'd be hard to be the final report if he lived...

I vaguely remember they used to have little fluff pieces for Hero Mechs once upon a time. Can't find them anymore, but they were fun to read little non-canon adventures that gave (in my opinion) actual personality to the Mech beyond the paint jobs.

That being said, PGI if you bring that back I totes volunteer to be your write up guy. :P
