I just wanted to put I thread up expressing how excited I am for this new game I am about to receive and how good it feel to be getting back into table top gaming.
I started with Warhammer 40K back in high school, but I never liked how cumbersome the game could feel at times. That,, and the fact that large swaths of my army became unplayable due to codex changes and the like,, put a bad taste in my mouth.
During this time I started to gravitate towards more specialist games and am still active in Blood Bowl [on the PC], and other PC adaptations. I would love to play over the board, but leagues aren't around here.
After loving this game so much I decided to pick up the anniversary box from Amazon and go from there. I'm excited to try it out with my Fiance who has also taken a shine to some of BattleTech. I may even hook up the webcam and stream some of the session fi we can figure out the rules. Either way I'll probably be back with Battle Reports and other silly things.
I'm just so damn excited I had to tell somebody!

I hope you won't be disappointed, because BT can also feel quite cumbersome some times, especially when dealing with many units and additional rules. But there are also simplified rules (and the First Strike variant) that make the game a lot quicker.
On the other hand, you'll never have to worry about outdated miniatures - in fact, you could easily play with the very first miniatures sold for the game. Rules in BT may change over time, but the units are always the same
I wish you a nice start into the world of BT tabletop and hopefully you'll have a lot of fun with your new box
If you encounter any problems along the way, feel free to ask here, we'll gladly help out!

Good for you. I just finished painting up the old introductory box set and have several Alpha Strike boxes on order. Be aware that there is an Alpha Strike (fast play battletech) box set in the works that is rumored (more or less confirmed by Catalyst Games) to have at least 22 more mechs, 10 of which will be Clan. So it is good times for those of us getting back into Battletech.

RedDragon mentioned something about BattleTech rules, and how they might change over time, but pick up a second edition box's rulebook and you'll hardly see any changes at all. This game is remarkably solid in its core ruleset, and it's mostly only in the expanded rules that you'll find tweaks to the rules. Have fun with it!

The New BT boxed set it great. I have the first version, and am going to buy the new one as well. The minis are great, the maps great, rules are tight. Its got everything youmneed to play. No furthur purchases needed. But you will want too.

I have my old laminated mech, infantry, vehicle and VTL sheets from the early 1990's. So I get to still play with Warhammers, Archers and Marauders.
