After a great 4v4 season for both the NA and EU leagues, we are now opening up Season 7. Season 7 will bring a few changes. The first major change is the league format. Swiss pairing has problems, but it also has massive benefits. So we are going to adjust the league format based on the number of teams. Tentatively this means:
  • If 8-13 teams in a league, seeded swiss-pairing 8 rounds. Strength of schedule modifier. No playoffs.
  • If 14-20 teams in a league, form 2 seeded-based divisions (as even as possible), 6 swiss-pairing rounds using a strengh of schedule modifier. Top 2 teams in each division enter a playoff.
  • 21+ teams in a league, expand to 3 divisions, otherwise same as above.

This will address the round issues, where we had too few rounds for too many teams to sort some of the standings for the playoffs. We also won't be allowing late teams to join. Further, with only the top 2 teams making the playoffs for each division (in larger leagues), this will avoid the cluster you get around the middle, further it will award the teams that have defeated all the other top teams. Further, the strength of schedule modifier should address any other issues. This ensures that a team does not get a high record by only playing teams with lower records. For example, if you won your first round (so 1-0), and on the second round, due to random drawing you played an 0-1 team, and then improved to 2-0, you would not play a 1-1 or 0-2 team in the 3rd round, no matter the results of random drawing. You'd automatically be pushed towards the top of the 2-0 teams, and you would then play another 2-0 team.

And now I'd like to propose the other new major rule. This one is up for some discussion, and could get changed. We are using a mech pool for each match. Teams will be able to sue a maximum of 3 of any chassis during a match. RHoD has been a minimal restriction league from the start, and I've been hesitant to bring in any changes which limit teams play. But I feel that it will increase the competitiveness of the league, while creating very interesting match-ups, and strategies in how teams will use their chassis pool.

Lastly, the king of the hill style worked really well, with some few exceptions. In consideration, is to modify the rule to allow teams to capture an opponent's starting base. Thus, while the fight would still be focused around the center, teams would have the option to not take the center point and try to win using the 2 end points. Alpine Peaks and Mining Collective would stay as the previous style, since they don't have starting bases. Further, teams won't be stuck using only the alpha lance. This was meant to stop teams from constantly switching lances to try to 'out lance' their opponent. Instead, when the appropriate team (e.g. home team on drop 1) chooses the side (i.e., Team 1 or Team 2), that team also will choose its lance. The other team can then choose any of the 3 lances on their side.
