As I understand it the cartoon series of Battletech was supposedly considered a propaganda piece in the line of the events, so having not read any of the books etc it's basically what I recall the most from the universe, but I was wondering are they portrayed like that else where or were they a little over the top in the cartoon?

Honestly the cartoon falcons were more villainous than ones in fiction. Sure there were some really scuzzy ones, but there were also falcons who were honorable and could recognize ability and respect. The villain from the cartoon would have been deemed dezgra I think, and been severely reprimanded for behavior fitting a rabid jaguar.

The portrayal in the BattleTech cartoon is indeed uncharacteristically over-the-top for the Jade Falcons, or the Clans in general.

I would second Marack Drock's recommendation of reading the Legend of the Jade Phoenix trilogy (individually: Way of the Clans, Bloodname, and Falcon Guard), as well as recommending the novels Freebirth and Falcon Rising by the same author.
