Ok, just thought of an easier solution to the map.

Raise the temperature in and around the volcano and lava flows. Make it so hot that even walking through it raises your temperature. Make it a death trap for slow mechs. Then it's a terrible place to fight and ridge hump, but can make a good way to sneak some quick mechs around to flank enemy forces.

Take Terra, ditch the center. Sprinkle in some small-ish mountains, some crevasses with lava/magma.

DESTRUCTIBLE BRIDGES across the lava rifts...

Bridges can ease access to cap points in Conquest...if you think you can make it.

Destructible bridges would be awesome. If mwo becomes an esport I wish it would be large open maps with terrain features like this that allowed good commanders to be creative. Let's find some mechwarrior Pattons out there and THAT I would watch.

At least one village within the volcano caldera, it is classed an active volcano and provides many benefits.

That MWLL sky would be better, might get rid of some stealth snipers.
Terra Therma, based on New River City look, should get a pass anyway.

Terra Therma actually offers good games when you do not focus on piling into the middle.

To be honest I think it's more a victim of players doing things the designers didn't expect - piling up at the ramps and creating huge bottlenecks in order to trade fire across the open space inside - as opposed to the crater being a dangerous shortcut across the map.

The solution to fixing it is actually much simpler than remodeling the volcano.

All they need to do is add more cover or obstructions inside the caldera so the ramps don't have clear firing lines to the other side of the crater. If people have to get up inside to fight then the traffic jam stops, people can spread out more and even, possibly, start maneuvering around inside for better firing positions.

I thought this also, would force change on the map from a "best area" and would be dynamic changes on the map like we have now with weather.

You could have it start a match with it open and then halfway through erupt....start matches with it already erupted and lava flows and such forcing tactics to change. And then of course one where it never does....but you wont know and it would be a gamble to hold the center or BEST one.

I actually like Terra Therma as it is. Frankly, I would like to see the OP's suggestion implemented as a second Therma-style map rather than as just a rework.
