Not entirely sure which medium mech I love more, but my recommendation is get them both (especially now with the 35% reduction).

Favorite WVR-6R build: 2 AC5 in right arm (40% cooldown reduction is insane, can push that up to 57% which I did), 1 ML torso, 3 SRM2 in torso (I chose those for weight and space reasons), XL 235 engine (kinda my standard engine I use on a lot of mechs).

Favorite WVR-7K build: 3 SRM6+artemis (20% cooldown reduction), 3 M(P)L (either one is fine), stock XL engine (currently my favorite mech). Reason to buy and play that mech: It is a brawling and cq-jumpsniping killing machine. My two very best games - an even 2000 exp and 2590 exp (4 kills, 890 dmg; both games without boni) - I played on this mech in that general loadout.

Videos to follow.

The 6R has no use for SRMs, at all. Dump them and put a decent sized engine in that thing. They make even less sense to carry, when you only go 76kph, too slow to get in range.

This build has all you need.

I pretty much use the same builds on both of those mech's, I'm really, really wanting to get the Hero varriant now that it has finally arrived. I've been waiting for it for a long time, even had the 4125 MC ready to go for months, but then, damn it, the Grid Iron went on sale 50% off a few weeks back and I caved on it. The GI has ruined me on gauss rifles, any mech I have a gauss on I'm spamming the fire button thinking WTF is taking so damn long for cooldown!?

I also use 3x SRM2 on mine + ML for backup in the event that my arm gets blown off, which happens in probably 2/5 of my matches since I like to run support/escort for assault mechs. I only carry I think 1-1.5T of srm ammo though since I'd rarely use it. The 7K, a huge XL engine, 3xML and 3x ASRM6. I bring that one along on CW matches to blow holes in mechs when we get into brawling range, works pretty good.

@ A.Z.: Yes, I also only use 1t of srm ammo on the 6R; nice to see that we have very similar ideas.

@ Kevjack. No way. You gotta have those srms. Why? Because the 6R is not a bursty shoulder-turning mech. It is a constant dmg mech, and if you wanna win those cq fights (or take less dmg), then you need those srms (only 2 AC5 and 1 ML does not sound good dmgwise). Also played it with 2 LRM5 in the past, which also worked alright. With the range of the AC5s, speed is not really an issue either.
