I keep seeing Ebon Jaguars running around the place with a bunch of weapons, they seem pretty popular. So are they popular for a reason and a good mech?

Best way to play them, in my opinion.

They are still new. New is cool. And as a sidekick they have one of the best harpoints without negative quriks yet.

They aren't bad. They have a low profile but High mounted Laser and ballistics pods. Can be good for hill humping. There seems to a growing trend to put dual gauss on everything. ( I ran into a dual gauss Enforcer last night) This mech is no exception to that trend. It also boats energy fairly well. It has some real funky hardpoint locations. However there are no lack of options to what you can bring. I am a fan of mixed load out mechs and the EBJ is great for that. Overall I think it's a nice mech but I feel that the Timber is slightly better.

It's a good mech, maybe even a great mech, but not "God tier". It brings timberwolf loadouts with good hard point locations, but it is a 65 tonner and is, as a result, fairly fragile. It's got slightly worse hitboxes than the timberwolf as well, but still not bad ones.

It's definitely a tier one mech, but not completely without drawbacks.

It's a glass cannon, but very fun to play

It's a good mech. The timber was still better with all the negativ quirks due to survability and hitbox reasons. With the nerfs on the TW being reduced pretty heavily, the TW is way ahead of the ebon jag again. Hitboxes really prevent it from being "TW tier".

Still a nice mech though.

A bit squishy compared to the TW, but a fun mech to pilot.

Its because they're "un nerfed" Timberwolfs, capable of equal or even higher firepower.

The only thing lost with EJ is there are no JJ variants, but that is a small price to pay for a smaller mech with an insane amount of firepower for its tonnage.

Ebon Jag is a great mech, easily sits inside the very short list of top heavy mechs in the game.

It can comfortably run:

Dual Gauss
3x UAC 5s
2x UAC 10s
Gauss + CERMLAS/CLPLs/CERPPCs
Laser Vomit

Can also do some missle builds + lasers but not as strong in this area

I personally find it's best suited to mid/long range builds, and not as ideal for short ranged builds due to hitboxes & overall geometry.

Cauldron Born is my favroite mech in thr game :P Finally unseating my Founder's Jenner, and King Crab. Aside from the Nova, it is the first clan mech I unabashedly love. (I really like my Koala, too)

I do best with 3 UAC5s + 3ERMLs, but I also do incredibly well with 2 UAC20s, and Gauss + 4ERLLs. My 2 UAC5 + 4SRM6+A is a fun mech, that looks awesome, but I rarely do super well with it.

The Shadowcat is gonna give it a run for it's money though... With MASC, that little mech is gonna be hell on wheels!

WTF really?

If thats true .. man.. some people really shouldnt be allowed to build their own mechs. Thats the best i could do, and it has 20 tonner armour, is incredibly slow and has nowhere near enough ammo.

Not really, the EBJ has slightly more tonnage to play with and everything you can mount on the TBR, you can mount on the EBJ but you'll be sacrificing JJ and armor for a lower profile.

The ebon is basically a smaller, frailer TBR without jj and slightly worse hitboxes (albeit sexier).

It does run ballistics better than the TBR, though.

Higher mounts means it long range hill humps better, with gauss, AC's, or PPC's

FTFY. Also, EBJ runs ballistics better, TBR runs missiles better. about the same at energy.

It's Clan trash, I killed one with my Commando today. Trusty ol' Rustbucket Blues never lets me down.

Son, you want to go with solid, reliable Inner Sphere 'mechs; dont' fall for the siren lure of the vatborn temptresses and their shiny tech. Your soul will thank you, and so will the Inner Sphere.

*spits tobacco*

Ayup.

I'm just saying that whatever you can mount on the TBR, you can mount it on the EBJ.
Now which chassis runs which setup better is an other story.

My main point was really that by far the biggest consideration when choosing between EBJ and TBR is if the EBJs profile and weapon mounts are worth dealing with its poop tier hitboxes

You also can't mount lower arm actuators on any of the variants, which makes it a bit harder to get arm weapons on target at close range.

Overall its a pretty decent mech though.
