Rather than taking every planet on the way, which can be very tedious and boring some, group the planets into sectors.

Lets take this layered image, not mine of course, its from 3062 - 3132 overlapped.

You see sectors formed, they need to work backwards starting 3132 to current time era we playing at to make the sectors. Sectors are not destined to any faction, for example the area where clan wolf is at and will be are not wolf exclusive, the rate we battling CW shows how motivated units and well played PuGs can really change the landscape. The capital for each faction will be its own sector as it stands with current CW mechanics. Each sectors will have a random number of planets as seen in the picture.

Same rules applied when contesting the sectors as it is with current CW mode.

When additional mechanics come to light, example logistics and resources, holding a sector with the planet that has the best logistics/resources in it will be fought more often and when surrounding a sector the effectiveness of the logistics/resources been blockaded. For added participation, winning a sector after a ceasefire does not mean the sector is under your faction complete ownership, if you manage to get the adjacent sectors surrounding it then its under your faction ownership. Think of it as a buffer, on the flip side maintaining the buffer will be just as important.

Another idea along with the sectors is some planets can be jump points where jumpships can get to, allowing to run thru the "blockade" and get that sector as "behind enemy lines bit" and retake sectors that were lost. This where the coffers will become useful, example 1 million C-bill to make a short jump(over 1 other faction occupied sector), 3 million C-bills for long jump (over 2 other faction occupied sectors) and jumping within your faction occupied sector is no cost.

I would think this can make CW more interesting.

Aaaaaaaam.... NO.

Planets are better, they mean "more" somehow, and they give us the feel of fighting for every speck of land out there..

Sometimes, less is more.
