I haven't played in about 7 months, game was a little broken back then and a lot of people were unhappy. I'd appreciate if someone could summarize what's happened since and if things like netcode, hitreg, and metagame have improved?

Game is still the same. They improved hitreg by making host state rewind account for animation (leg positions, torso rotation), and they introduced EU servers, which reduces ping for most Europeans by 100ms.
Metagame is still laser vomit. They did improve clan cannons, I think, so you see a bit more of them lately, but the gros is still lasers.

Lots of whining cause this that or the other is OP UP or just stupid.
Haven't missed much.
Oh and River City got an awesome facelift!

On the whole, it's basically a straight improvement across the board, but there's nothing "unique" as of yet.

I just recently came back for the first time since early beta. Last time I played there were only 8 mechs and maybe 4 maps.
My impressions have been the following:
Weapons are in a pretty good place, basically every weapon except flamethrower gets used on some things.
Medium lasers no longer dominate all builds. Many mechs use multiple weapon systems.
Time to kill is probably too low by 25-30% at the moment.
Hit registration is so massively improved I can hardly believe it. You can now leg lights with confidence.
In some ways the game is not as far along as I'd hoped, but in others it is vastly better than it was.

Game is on a treadmill. Basically the same as 7 months ago.
A few improvements that don't lend themselves to a reason to actually play this game.
Oh ya and there are more mechs....which you can always count on because you know, they need money to pay 20 artists and 6 developers.

Small steps. As always. They did improve hit registration by making it take into account the animation. I think compared to the previous metas we've had. We're at a better place. And they hope to do a rebalance of all the mechs, soon.
They redid Rivercity. It now has a day and night cycle that changes during the match. And you can knock over trees on the map. They're working on updating Forest Colony now.
We should be getting an improved spectator mode this or next month.
The mechlab changed. It's more like smurfy's mechlab. But the mech select screen leaves something to be desired. Which they say will be improved on.
They added European servers.
If you're expecting a revolution. Aside from the changes to Rivercity. You won't find a lot that will make you go "WHOA!". Just a lot of smaller things that you'll think are neat. But then promptly forget and accuse PGI of only making mechs.
