TL;DR version - I keep dying in heavies and assaults way too much. What do.

It's mostly about positioning which isn't just map positioning, but also taking into account your team's position. You can easily get overrun even if you are behind a rock.

If you're a slow brawler assault, you'll have to be good at deciding when to go in because you probably just get 1 chance to do it right the entire game. This works best if you aren't primary so if someone else goes ahead it'll give you enough time to move into position to do your damage.

If you like to peek and shoot you need some speed. I find that warhawks do it great at 70 kph when mastered and having guns on either side means I can be a threat with 2 CERPPCs no matter which side the enemy comes from while only having to expose half my mech. Other mechs can do it as well to some degree. For mechs like this, I bring 9x9 and Coolshot 6 and save it for when someone gets into my face. While you can use cover take the time to cool off normally but if that isn't an option then firing about 10-12 ER PPC shots into the CT of anther assault has a good chance of letting you survive if you use your Coolshots.

Arm weapons are good for peek and shoot, less mech exposure when going sideways. If you are fighting on a slope or using vertical cover then you need high mounted weapons.

A lot of people shut down in bigger mechs due to the huge number of guns. If this happens a lot you'll have to see if you need to take lower heat guns (like Gauss or AC) so that you can be a threat longer instead of being a two-shot Alpha warrior before shutting down. If your mech runs cooler than the other guy's, it can make duels easier since you can press forward if he tries to go behind cover and catch him on the verge of overheating to finish him off.

Overall though, you need to be looking at your map a lot. Where your team is relative to you and the enemy will determine if you can perform well or not. Brawler heavy/assault mechs are okay, but remember that you might become useless for 90% of the match and your team might get wiped out before you can make your move. Try and get something that moves 64-70 kph for starters.

If you have the money, you can probably buy a clan heavy mech that moves at 80-90 kph which should solve your maneuverability problems.

I have a handy guide for piloting heavy mechs (my specialty), so if you have any questions, feel free to ask me.
