Ok new pic, this time i experimented with black-white 3-1,4-1,5-1 .Trying to create some deapth to the chassi.I also tried to fix my misstake with too thik red paint by scraping most off and readding thinner red paint .

Any suggestions?

Word of advice- Mount your mech to a mex base before painting it. Its easily to fill in around the edges with green stuff before you have to worry about scatching paint. Plus you can prime it all at once since you need to paint the metal hex bases anyways.

White vs Black primers- I usually go with brown actually. I'd probably paint with black before white though. White makes it easier to get a bright color scheme. Black/brown makes missed spots in deep cracks looks like dirt or extra dark shadow. Black has the deepest shading built in. In general I feel like white primer is preferred if you're going for a competition level mini where you're going to throw a whole lot of time into it. Black is easier to paint if you're doing a whole army at once.

If you really want something like red to pop, you'll want to add a layer of white first. Red tends to be sort of a thin pigment.

Its an article I wrote on painting some of the heavy gear minis. Similar scale to battletech and most of it will apply.

You're really getting that glass effect to come out nicely! Highlighting black is notoriously difficult - what are your plans?

Snow is tricky! I tried to use baking powder once but if you don't seal it with something like a matte varnish it will take on a yellow color after a while.

google Magic Wash ..I think the recipe is still out there some where. I used it a LOT to wash minis darker and get into the cracks. Its a combination of Future Floor wax and paint. Works really well for highlighting armor plates and such.

also over the years I have tried several things for snow... there is a substance that here anyway is called snowy tac which gives a nice thick snow look. and woodland scenics makes a snow for bases as well. Well technically snow for model railroaded but it works for mini bases quite well. I have several different types of thier basing materials. and Games Workshop makes some good one too but they are more expensive.

By "wet stickers" do you mean water slide decals? If so, ensure your mech has a nice gloss to it before putting them on. If you try to put water slide decals on a dull surface your decals will usually silver. I always use Future floor acrylic as a protective and shiny coat. I have seen Future as Sols Plus overseas.

I love to see people getting into the minis. Keep up the good work...and remember, it is your mech. Do what makes you happy!

model making thread. sweet.
As far as primer goes, I use grey or brown. and I don't use Sandlable/filler primers as, in the case of minis, they can fill detail up.

One thing i will say is that painting technique is a very personal thing; if a figure is good or bad depends on the painter first and the audience second; so if you like black primer or bright orange primer, if it achieves the look you want, then it is bang on.
after 20+ years as a figure painter and 10 as a professional model maker, please trust me when I tell you this is not a subject where you can make absolute declarations. Ask a group of model makers/painters what you want to achieve and they will each give you a different option. some may be worse than others, but it comes down to what make sense to you and what appeals to how you function.

I use brown or grey as they suit my own tastes entirely; but I don't fixate, I change depending on the subject; my Imperial Fists were UC a mid brown because I wanted the yellow to take an industrial flavour, my Blood Angels were UC very dark red. because they are Blood Angels.

Experiementation is the way; If you ask me, it's half the fun.

I've found for a good black effect:
Prime the mini black, highlight the the edges and raised parts with a blue-grey. Lightly wash with a black ink and let dry. Hit it with Dull-cote to take the shine of the ink off.
Then finish off any other colors you want.
I'll post a pic if I can figure out how.

Regarding Future floor polish - in the UK it used to be called Klear but changed its name to Pledge multi surface wax. That might be useful to anyone else in europe looking for it.

Nice work on the miniatures, I love a modelling thread too

I like acrylic paints for the main bulk of painting work, then a coat of Future, decals, more future, thinned oil enamel washes, a bit more future, pigments, then a dull coat. Was also a fan of black undercoats for almost eveything back in my WH40k days but now a lean towards Tamiya primers when I can find/afford it.
