It doesn't bother me as much in regular game play but every time we have a tournament like the current one, I realize just how hard it is to get points when you are a fast mech and doing your job of capturing resources.
It's hard enough to get people to do that role and I have seen many close matches lost because a team failed to stay on top of capturing resources. When we have tournaments like this one, even when you win, you can easily wind up making less than the 30 point point match score required for a tournament point.
That said, in my opinion, we really should be giving more match points for resources rather than punishing people for doing their job.

To be fair, I don't find capping points "exciting" or "worthwhile" in general... due to the sheer boredom that can come with that.
The simple fact though the point of the mode is to get as many resources as possible, I don't have a problem with breaking down the deathball aspect, but I doubt this would affect the terrible map design for any of this.

I simply don't run a fast mech with capping in mind during the tournament, at least not while I'm trying to grind my points.

1 capping light can greatly help your team but they sacrifice their earnings doing it, yes

You should get a huge amount of cbills for capturing conquest points, especially because most maps favor killing the enemy team outright instead of capturing points at all. The main reason being, in a capture-based game-mode, capturing something should be the equivalent to say, 4 or 5 kills.
Same goes for Assault. Capturing the base should reward with more cbills. More 'mechs on cap, shorter the time, the higher the payout.

It seems strange that capping points isn't the most lucrative thing to do in conquest. That you still have to get killing blows to make the money. The game mode won't play different unless the rewards are different. A light mech should load up conquest to get rich the same way a heavy or assault does for skirmish.
Bringing up the cbill and points rewards for capping also gives new players a starting point. Put the new guy in a light, get him setup learning the maps since he's got to run around to all the points. He'll earn enough to buy some mechs and earn steady income. (Unless this is exactly what PGI doesn't want
