We lack the ability to create smoke screens, something which has been a common ability of tanks for a long time.

How it could work is that you have several small smoke grenade launchers that when used launches all grenades at once in such a way that it creates a semi-circular (or straight) wall of smoke about 100-150 meters wide. The smoke should work just as hard cover when it comes to visibility and target lock (should block IR).
It should be deployed fast, say 2-3 about seconds to have the full wall of smoke and could dissipate after maybe 20 seconds.

There would be many uses for a smoke screen:
  • Covering a retreat
  • Temporarily denying the enemy some information by blocking his sight
  • Create a corridor to cover the flank of an advance.

This has been suggested before but I like it, it'd have to block heat vision as well obviously.

I like this, adds to tactical side of the battles.

Unfortunately, and as much as I like the idea, I could see this used as much to troll players with marginal GPUs making their frame rates drop to unplayable levels.

I'd rather have this added as a feature to the flamers.
You know? Setting trees and terrain on fire, to create smoke that blocks LoS and maybe even messes with the targeting.

As much as I like this idea, would be hard on my graphics card. What you're talking about is dynamic lighting and sensor reading info, which would likely be done on the client side (and would get exploited likely) because doing these calculations on the server side for multiple players would be WAY too much of an increase in server load.

If this was a BT (lore) simulator, it would not only block thermal vision... It would impair lasers. :D

Hmmm impairing lasers would be interesting.

Indeed. Though most forms of smoke would only affect lasers (except TAG; which had me quirk a brow).

Sadly techmanual and a few other sources (Battletechnology, etc.) state that unlike lasers, PPCs are not affected (since PPCs are "nothing like lasers contrary to popular belief, and have nothing to do with lightning which is just a visual side effect" [paraphrased]).

One can dream.
