I would also think that an Xbox controller would work well for controlling a mech. Left stick for throttle/turning and right torso twist/vertical aiming.

Now for you, using the Logitech Extreme, it'll be more of a personal preference. You do have the throttle control there on the base, as well as the extra buttons to pick up some of the slack, but when I was using one of those, I would tend to switch between my left hand being on the throttle and on the keyboard, based on the game I was playing and the situation.
TL;DR:
Do what feels right for you. Experiment to figure out what will feel natural for you, and stick with that. All of the opinions expressed here are just opinions. There is no "right" way to play, so just find what allows you to have the most fun.
See you on the battlefield.

They put the friggen TWIST on the joystick and took the rudder off the throttle which was my old twist control!!!! *goes postal*
Going to go with the Thrustmaster T-Flight Joystick and throttle combo since it has a rudder under the throttle for torso twist.

Btw. Im curious, when launching mech is there some kind of "startup sequence"? perhaps not so long as in Steel batalion but something that would give impresion of launching mech.
