I'd say personal preference, for instance I'd rather use a joystick because its more immersive

If you are used to the mouse, i'd stick with that at the start.. see how that goes.
R.A.T. 7 is one hell of a mouse with lots of options to it!

Because of the limit to the speed in which mech's torsos can twist, you really aren't at a disadvantage using a joystick over a mouse in MWO. In other games, the increase in seek time when you use a joystick is a large disadvantage.

I would also think that an Xbox controller would work well for controlling a mech. Left stick for throttle/turning and right torso twist/vertical aiming.

I'm going to try to use my joystick for as much as possible. Now granted, I have a Saitek X-52 (which has served me well for years, I bought it for a song when Circuit City went out of business) so there will (hopefully) be less need of me to use the keyboard, although I still expect to do so for things like comm channels, map controls, and weapon re-grouping. But for the actual process of moving, aiming, and firing, I should be able to keep my hands on the joystick and throttle.

Now for you, using the Logitech Extreme, it'll be more of a personal preference. You do have the throttle control there on the base, as well as the extra buttons to pick up some of the slack, but when I was using one of those, I would tend to switch between my left hand being on the throttle and on the keyboard, based on the game I was playing and the situation.

TL;DR:
Do what feels right for you. Experiment to figure out what will feel natural for you, and stick with that. All of the opinions expressed here are just opinions. There is no "right" way to play, so just find what allows you to have the most fun.

See you on the battlefield. :P

For the first time ever I have to shun Saitek - I went through multiple x35 and x36 joystick/throttle combos for Mw3 and 4. The next logical step was to upgrade to the X52 system but there is one HUGE issue!

They put the friggen TWIST on the joystick and took the rudder off the throttle which was my old twist control!!!! *goes postal*

Going to go with the Thrustmaster T-Flight Joystick and throttle combo since it has a rudder under the throttle for torso twist.

Btw. Im curious, when launching mech is there some kind of "startup sequence"? perhaps not so long as in Steel batalion but something that would give impresion of launching mech.
