Do they not know how to do this? They could make the cbill earnings
even better and would bring a new mode that people can enjoy might expand the popluation for a little while if it advertised better than average cbill earnings
perhaps have rewards depending on how well you do?
Perhaps be able to make a short term alliance but you have to split the reward
or something but limited to only 2 people at a time and can break at any time kinda a risky proposition but just might get you the last kill or something like that.

in free for all only the most survivable mechs would get picked for obvious reasons, what would be the point of taking a speedy mech or a glass canon, or a sniper, or support weapons? there would be absolutely no point to any of this,
there would be no critseekers, no flankers, no hit and runners, no skirmishers...

Unless there are dedicated maps, that is to say, larger maps, I don't see the gameplay being very good. Right now I think FFA would polarize the builds too much. Plus it would have to be divided by Weight class unless perhaps we were allowed to take 4 mechs with a weight limit like CW.

In regards to camping, a simple solution would be to crown a winner based on score or damage done, so the people who actually fight are rewarded more than the vultures.
Alternatively, add respawns to the mode, and make it first to X number of kills wins.
This is a pretty big hyperbole. The "best" mechs will certainly be chosen more, but specialists and "fun" mechs will certainly also have a place. It's not like your life is on the line to win every game.

You can get around this by decreasing the play area as time goes by (say cut the play area in half every 2 minutes, with a 30 second warning). People can snipe and lrm at the start but would be forced to brawl eventually.

That's ASSUMING the maps are large with hiding places. so your Wrong.
Typical arena maps just have some obstacles here and there with the rest of the space wide open.
