Have to admit playing anti mech infantry would be a fun challenge. But I suspect that would require a huge amount of additional work giving structures more detailed interiors and features which may well be beyond the scope of current projected development for the game.

Perhaps a smart way to implement this would be to put it in a specific game mode. That way people that don't like it could stay away, people that do could play it more, and it may inspire new ideas. They could perhaps function like creeps in a MOBA, providing in-round resources that could be used for making in-round purchases for example. Although this would be fun (and should be kept on the drawing board when looking at new game types IMO) there's probably many other pressing matters that need to be dealt with for now.

If playable infantry could hide in structures, those structures would have to be destructible...
I know it won't happen, but that would be so freakin' awesome.

What about ground troops as NPCs? As base defense for example.

You want to step on them?
They will just aimlessly die.
