i find that playing dragon it is really easy for the enemy to hit my center core rather than any other place.
i seem to be able to last longer using a hunchback rather than a dragon even though my hunchback is slower and has less armor...
does anyone know any details on why this may be?

Have you looked at the shape of a Dragon from the outside?
The Dragon has a large, protruding piece representing part of its center torso. This piece can literally be hit from behind the mech.
Your Hunchback has much simpler, square-er geometry with a much narrower and flatter center torso area. So, enemies are much less likely to actually hit the center. They're generally most likely to hit the right torso, where the hunch is.

Yeah, it was born that ugly bud. Big ol' "SHOOT ME HERE" beer gut on the Dragon.

Terrible hitboxes, some of the worst in the game. It's up there with the Awesome.
It's why it has the quirks it does, because without a truly outrageous rate of fire, you can't kill anything before it can lazily swat your giant protruding CT out of existence.
