1 have to defend an entry point or you fail the invasion
2 (optional) have to expand area and create base
2 have to fight to enemy bases so you have a possibility of many scouting interactions, and open field (though not actually open in a open plain) attacks, Choosing your own attack routes, IE not having to crash land everywhere you go (as it is now) fighting to the main base and kicking their asses off MY planet. Screw up enough in any of these key attempts, and you end up on the defensive or even failing.
