Hello. Im fan of mechwarrior, I played it when I was very young on very old pc and it was My favourite game, especially Mechwarrior 3, I still have it on disc. I tryied to run MWO 2 yrs ago but My PC wasn't good enough to handle it on even 30 fps, so it was unplayable. Now I got an upgrade and Im downloading it, and here is My question: How many people still play the game? It's going well (2000+ players) or is it rather dead (500-1000 players)?

By October-14 there was 1.6 million registered accounts.
I think there is more than 200.000 active players nowadays.

A friend told me a month ago it's about 200.000. And it's a trustful source :)

Edit: Active players doesn't mean they are logged on/playing all by the same time!

PGI does not release player numbers (presumably because they are embarrassingly low), but it's easily more than 2000+ active players.

I did a tally of players involved in the competitive scene, it was very roughly 1,000 players and the competitive scene is a tiny portion of the total player population. For every competitive player I see in game I probably see ten more non-competitive players. So my conservative estimate is between 7,000 and 11,000 active, but I could be completely bonkers wrong. Just looking at the Steam list and comparing to other games, I would expect MWO to fall around the 2,000-4,000 concurrent mark at best, somewhere just below TESO which has ~65,000 active and ~4,000 concurrent.

back in may there was a big event "The Battle of Tukyyid" in the Community Warfare game mode, PGI did release figures for participation in that event, now CW usualy accounts for a small percentage of the population however as there was an event on, especially one (very loosely) based upon the legendary battle ot Tukyyid where according to Battletech lore the Com Guards defeated the Clans leading to the Clans pausing the invasion for 15 years. those numbers were probably higher than usual for CW,

there were over 17,000 accounts that participated in that event.

it is quite possible that half or more of the player base ignored that event, then again it is also possible that many inactive players logged on to participate

ether way as far as I am aware that is the only time PGI has ever published any form of player numbers.

edit:
my guess would be between 10,000 and 50,000 active players

As this game has a larger percentage of mature players (older than the average PVP F2P I'd say) I think the difference between the number currently playing and active is much greater than your average game.

What I mean to say is that I think current total playing will spike more during peak gaming times and weekends due to the higher portion of players in MWO who can't commit to playing 24/7. Likewise, the population seems to spike quite a bit for events and after mech releases.

Hmmm, really? 17,000 would put us in the top 20 on Steam. Maybe we're better off than I thought. But 50,000 is ludicrously high and would put us in the top 5. =P

edit: ah, I'm reading the "currently online" players on the Steam list. Do they even have a total active players list anywhere? 'cause yeah, our numbers have gotta be shjt.
edit again: found something comparable. Maybe 50,000 isn't so far off.

I think even 50,000 might be low.

I'd expect that a huge chunk of the players are casuals (but still "active" players by any measure, i.e. log on on a weekly or at least monthly basis) who don't even have anything approaching a CW drop deck. Then there are others who would have a drop deck, but simply choose to not play CW. I think these two groups together constitute a very great majority of the player base.

And finally you have those who might have participated, but had to take the kids camping, appease the wife for playing too much, or go to their cousin's wedding.

If they could bring over 17,000 people to CW during a single weekend event, I'd guesstimate the more or less active player base somewhere in the low six figures.

It was great event and 3/4 goes CW. 20k total. It's possible regular online have 6k-10k people.

given that I would say around 20k-30k players loging in daily cna be a fitting estimation, wiht maybe around 2k- 2.5k online at the same time at EU primetimes.

I'm going to guess 500-1000 every 10-20 minute intervals on the weekdays, dependant on the time of day and 6 times that from Friday nights till Sunday night, for NA and EU servers. It's quite hard to guess Oceanic servers but i'm guessing the highest potential for growth would be that server, that is if it can realize its potential.
