They were an addon because the authors got tired of writing poli-combat novels about inner sphere lunacy. Clans were the worst thing that happened to the Battletech universe. And really made no sense, unless you can envision a complete remake of ALL society with tech evolution in a two century period in which eugenics and technology were monumentally developed on hostile planets. Throw in time to explore and the fact that there were no known jump points outside the periphery and you have a plate full of crap to make a sandwich with.

Canon? Yes. Good? Not so much. Just another Deus Ex Machina ploy to liven up authors' lives. I will never forgive Stackpole for being so damned lazy.

lazy haphazard introduction, possibly; however, from the way i understand it, the clans were always planned on.

Each era has its own tech requirements and chassis restrictions.

Plus it gives PGI a reason to reset the map every month or so that we can all live with.

Plus PGI can then accelerate the time line to whenever they want. (I'd suggest 3060 for those sweet sweet techs and chassis)

Forced stock mode and only units that meet the era tech level (but for sanity a mech that meets say tech 1 but is 3074 built would be usable in 3025, and a tech2 IS tech would be fine in 3049-3055/2750 era event, clans would be ok in any post 3049 etc.
We'd need more chassis that may be duplicates for the sake of hard points on existing mechs but it'd be doable.just more... quirks? /shrug
