These are some numbers I (somewhat lazily) came up with via browsing Smurfy. I found it interesting, how it compares with their rankings on metamechs.com & player perceptions around the forums - so now I decided to share.

Clan mechs by 'free tonnage' to next half ton (all equipment stripped, max armor except when some points are shaved to reach next half ton):
  • Dire Wolf, 50.5 (44.5 w/ JJ)
  • Warhawk, 32.5
  • Ebon Jaguar, 29
  • Timberwolf, 27.5 (22.5 w/ all JJ)
  • Mad Dog, 26
  • Executioner, 25
  • Hellbringer, 23.5 (22.5 w/ ecm)
  • Stormcrow, 23
  • Summoner, 21
  • Gargoyle, 20
  • Adder, 16.5
  • Shadowcat: 16 (15 with ECM)
  • Nova, 15.5
  • Kit Fox, 14.5 (13.5 with ecm; 11.5 w/ all JJ & ECM)
  • Ice Ferret, 9
  • Arctic Cheetah: 8 (7w/ ECM)
  • Mist Lynx, 6.5
Ratio of free tonnage to total tonnage:
  • Dire Wolf: .505 (full JJ: .445)
  • Kit Fox: .483 (ECM: .450; ECM+ full JJ:.383)
  • Adder: .471
  • Ebon Jaguar: .446
  • Mad Dog: .433
  • Stormcrow: .418
  • Warhawk: .382
  • Timber Wolf: .367 (full JJ: .300)
  • Hellbringer: .361 (ECM: .346)
  • Shadowcat: .355 (ECM: .333)
  • Nova: .310
  • Summoner: .300
  • Arctic Cheetah: .267 (ECM: .233)
  • Executioner: .263
  • Mist Lynx: .260 (ECM: .220)
  • Gargoyle: .250
  • Ice Ferret: .200

Pretty Charts!

I wonder how the comparison would change if we included hardwired equipment as a part of "free" tonnage." For example, a Mad Cat has 5 hardwired DHS, which would bring its effective pod space up to 32.5 tons...

I like how the timby is in the middle and people say its a good all around mech.

you can put dual uac5s on an adder with reasonable ammo and 3 backup lasers. the irony is this is the same loadout as i use on my gargie, of course it has more ammo but one less laser. i even ran an interesting build with gauss+ppc, though with ammo lacking a bit (of course that was before the flamer got unlocked, so you can haul an extra 5 rounds now).

i always considered the ice ferret to be a top notch mech, so im rather supprised it has the worst podspace to total weight ratio. though i admit i usually just run it with 5ermls.

as somone who likes to run ballistics i really dont like the timby. but its a great mech for missile and/or laser boaters. i wish they would come out with a couple high ballistic only st omnipods for the thing. of course the thing doesnt really have the tonnage for it.

Ice Ferret can be a great mech. It has comparable pod space to the other fast mechs in the lineup (the cheetah and lynx). As a tradeoff for no jumping capacity it has increased durability.

The mech that disappoints me is the gargoyle. Not nearly enough space for weapons unless you start stripping armor...which is a bad idea in my opinion.

You guys do realize that balance is based on many more things than just free tonnage, right?

This puts a different perspective on what has the best space per ton.

MLX GAR IFR seem to be the very worst.

True. This chart is worth nothing.

the gargoyle's saving grace is it is fast, and i suppose it makes a good laser boat too with its 6 forced heat sinks in its 400xl engine. its a great mech for cw because you can keep up with heavies and mediums durring a push. if you think of it as a fat medium it kind of makes more sense. its sort of equivalent of a banshee 3m with a 400xl, but it goes a hair under 90 when mastered instead of just 75.

yeah its called being facetious. arctic cheetah is pretty much the best light in the game right now but the chart ranks it as one of the worst mechs.

this.

theres something to be said for an assault that moves as fast as the gargoyle does.

its certainly not one of the best clan mechs, but I personally dont think its as bad as people claim. And certainly it ranks higher than the warhawk.

And all of these mechs pack Clan XL, which the best engine a mech can hope for at this timeline.

Yep. Considering the effectiveness of laser vomiting, the fixed DHS are not as much of a liability as one would think.

if i had to pick my least favorite clan mech, id have to say its the mad dog. no torso or head laser hardpoints, and too lerm centric. i had a 2x uac10 + 2x asrm2 build that was sort of functional. streak boat kind of worked. but it was fragile enough to make whatever you put in it suck.

Why would you put Artemis on SRM2? You could have had 4 x SRM2s instead.

The Gargles is a surprisingly springy and agile assault mech. I definitely pilot it like I would one of my mediums and I have had pretty great success in it. Doesn't have much in the ways of tonnage to work with, but some builds are devastating on it (i.e. 10 SPL ****-a-thon)

Dire wolves are realistically 51 tons since most people shave the legs to 73 points on 100 tonners.

You can get 52 tons more or less safely by going down to a little over 60 on the legs and taking some points off the arms, you almost never lose them before the sidetorsos anyway.
