I'll paint you a scene, if you've played faction wars it should sound familiar.
You start a map on the "offensive" side of the map... the only objective on the screen in to destroy omega.
Everyone runs to the gates and the side with omega take up defensive turtle formation and drops air strikes at the entrance, the "attacking" side runs into the choke point in pug murder ball fashion and dies.
Anyone with a ounce of brains quits immediately and goes back to the normal modes never even looking at faction wars for months.
Question: why even have an omega objective? does it do something?

Do you know how a Planetary Assault works?
To bring up the BIG troop carriers you need first to neutralize the BIG defenses against them. The OMEGA is a giant citadel Gauss, taking out your space armada. The only way to neutralize it is sending a small army small enough to avoid being shot by the Gauss, but also strong enough to do the job - this is when Battlemechs comes into play.
If you look at the planet when you select it at the lobby, there are many "slices" around it to be conquered. Each slice is a Gauss Citadel shooting approaching warships/carriers/big dropships, that's why you need to take them all off to conquer the planet. I don't call this meaningless, i call this immersion.
If you don't care about any objective other than shooting 'mechs, go play Skirmish.
