Need to rain on the parade a little bit here, unfortunately.

The modification of game PAK files is not permitted in any form. This restriction extends to modifications that may not provide any tactical advantage, such as a sound pack.

We all agree that custom sound packs would be a sweet feature to implement, but we do not currently have plans to do so. As far as I'm aware the file system is not designed to support end-user modification right now, and with all the other tasks currently at hand we don't have the development resources available that would be required for implementing that kind of functionality.

So yes, do what you guys want but don't listen to the players and do things they would love to pay for.

So in other news how is mech pack 59 coming then? surely you could get a few more mechs pack on pre-sale than just 2 right?

Packs sell well. Even if some people would prefer something else. And they don't have to pull people off other stuff to do it. They probably have the same people working on it each time.

I swear sometimes you all go out of your way to avoid making money. There have been plenty of people stating they would pay money to get alternate sounds in the game. So you can't do it right now because of resources, at least plan to do it at some point. That would get these people playing more knowing that someday they can get what they desire.

Hey Alex I would like you to pass that idea on to the other guys it sounds like a good idea. Personally for me and some others the sounds back in Closed beta just felt more. Cheesy and mechwarrior like. Would there ever come a time when looking back into sound dev would take place. I'm sure you watched the vids some of those sounds are just so far fitting.

Thank you Alexander for taking the time to make this clear once again. I appreciate the transparency.

Hopefully no plans for custom sound packs will just become PGI's stance at the time though.

That's a real shame, the modded sounds make the game immersion so much better. Especially with Betty, since she gives you so much extra information compared to the current we have in game right now. It just helps build that immersion, kinda sad we can't use it now :(

No need to be dynamic right now, just put some static image on them as a placeholder but please a different static image on each screen

Well there it is, once again, the OFFICIAL word that game file mods are illegal, regardless of which files are modded.

I do like the closed beta betty more than the current one. And I'd hope to one day have a sound selection choice in game settings to change back to it.

But I'm not putting my $800+ investment at risk for it now.

Someone needs a thicker skin.

You can simply ignore the mechpacks. Don't look at them.

Last I saw we have discussions going on about custom Geometry for some mechs, just had a poll for mech rescaling, getting a complete balance pass, have a complete tutorial in testing and now know there's something being done to the cockpit monitors.

You're complaining because they're not jumping on a sound pack cash grab immediately after 3 pages of a forum thread?

Don't get me wrong here, I'd love it but priorities dude.

This is the MWO MW2 sound mod you can download different packages whether all sound effects or just the betty.

I am not going to install because PGI says so.

BUT

That is the most immersive feeling I have had from MWO since I started playing, AND I AM NOT EVEN PLAYING, IT IS A DAMN VIDEO.

Seriously, the intense music in the background and the betty feedback and warning buzzers are, and have always been, a big part of why MW2 has a following still.

Alex, please pass on to the crew there how important sound, and yes music too, are to immersion and the polish of the game. The whole MWO game is based on battletech and draws it's playerbase, and especially it's funding(for sure initialy) from the older players. What is Mechwarrior if not a giant nostalgia trip? Mechpacks sell because of the games history. Otherwise it just isn't battletech. Sound and music etc is all part of that.

Put it on the white board:
Music
weapon sounds(individual and pack style)
Betty
HUD sounds

Get a goal in place, work at it, sell the packs/files for MC. Watch as money flows in, players are happier with the product, game longevity is increased.

Well this was posted not just for sound mods but for sound in general. Most people over look it but I think it is a very important role to a game like this. Maybe something like different sound foot steps for weight classes. Like much heavier for when you in an assault mech compared to a light. Cause right now they all have the same step sounds. Powering up sounds need to feel like you switching on a powerful reactor. Something like mechwarrior 4 reactor.

Other from that I just also wanted to see if any one else also looked at the sounds and thought they are good but they should feel louder , powerful, hard hitting an badass. I personally feel closed beta sounds ( besides the PPC ) were great. The sense of smashing some one with srms making that heavy impact sounds. The clang impact of a AC shell impacting , Whoosh of LRMs an those cheesy but so fitting energy weapons.

It would really be nice if the game could go through another sound overhaul to bring more immersion and powerful nature to sound. I.E closed beta sounds with kind like MW 2 betty.

Wierd thing this, considering they OK-d sweet fx , there should be an addendum to the rules that says that you shouldn't stream or post modified videos as it doesn't represent the property or licence of the game owner, as there are probly some legal isues using mw2 assets, on the other hand I don't see why they would ever ban or even search for users using it for there enjoyment unless they found a viral video or post of it...

Interesting thought, but could one modify the sound files so that enemy footsteps were a lot louder even when far away x) ? Otherwise hard to create a sound based explit.

From my experience with listening to the way their sound engine works - if you had the intention of modifying the sound pack for taking advantage of things like the footsteps it really wouldn't be all that difficult even for someone that doesn't work with audio all that much - Just unpack, grab the file, boost the levels on the volume until they were near or at peaking then save and repack.

You can tell their audio engine is quite simple by how things like multiple ac5s saturate to holy hell when they are all fired together instead of a mild gain.

It also wouldn't take a lot of effort to change the sounds of different weapons and change them to speech, the main trick would be to trimming the length or quality to get the same file size. Their current protection system doesn't seem to match anything else if people are out there already modding the .paks and not setting off flags.
