It also had the best intro for any BT videogame.

Yeah, can you imagine what this game would be like if 2 LRM-20s took out your fresh Summoner in one volley? Without crazy bad CoF, this game would be call of duty firepower with world of warships speeds. Nigh unplayable.

It already kinda is.....despite double armor values. The whole reason for double armor in the 1st place was to prevent the very issue with the game now...

Yet they go and jack damage up like mad, toss on insane quirks and modules so, the problem is still here....

I kind of wish a single AC20 was a weapon to be feared. Now I run on YLWs with my LCT and know that I can take one hit without dying, and I will bob and weave enough that they probably won't hit me at all. It'd be a different ballgame if one hit was a kill. Now, when I run on dual gauss Jagers, it's quite a pucker factor situation....

Thats why I still enjoy playing living legends more than MWO, the Solaris announcer is boss.

Well that and MWOs mechlab has way to much freedom, leading to the over use of meta loadouts on a very few select chassis with "good" hardpoint locations. this has made weapon balance effectively impossible.

Mechlab is fine except for the fixed Clan equipment and the partial issue of putting AC-20's into machine gun mounts. The way you avoid Meta's is to make all the weapons have a purpose. Long Range is very accurate, but has a longer recycle than Short Range. PGI has never understood this and balances MWO as if it were a standard First-Person-Shooter where the player_character carries just one weapon at a time. So you get, "The Meta", instead of, "The Tactic", in load-outs. It's very simple to fix and easy to understand and always works, or did in previous MechWarrior games. MWO is so shallow in it's combat mechanics because the weapons are all balanced off Optimal Laser Range right now. So we get Laser-Brawl.

I still play MC Gold and MW3 and MW4. I like the intro's in MW3 and the simulated weapons very much. Did you know Zipper Interactive was making combat sims for the Army just prior to making MW3? Probably why MW3 has the best simulated weapons of any MechWarrior game even if the graphics are a bit dated. The initial Mission intro in MW3 is best. Then you get dumped down into a beach head landing zone.

Mechwarrior 2 was the best because of the tremendous amount of quality material featured in the briefings and the archive room. You don't need shiny videos and dramatic voice-acting to create immersion.

These threads are always so bitter sweet. "Remember the Mechwarrior franchise when it had actual story arcs and realistic mission objectives and interesting missions and great voice acting and a coherent connection to the Battletech universe? Yeah, those were the days. Anyway... what do you think of this 7 MPL Hellbringer? Do you think it's better with 8 MPLs?"

Personally, I really loved that most of the Mechwarrior games had a somewhat novel story to tell in the BT universe. In MW2, you were part of a vast war machine, just a soldier in Clan Wolf or Jade Falcon. In MW2:Mercs, you had your own operation after your predecessor died, leaving you big boots to fill. You had to worry about contracts, hiring mechwarriors, even finding air support for your missions. In MW3 there was a fantastic campaign that took a small force deep behind enemy lines. The specifics of the story escape me. In MW4:Vengeance you had another mercenary story, but from a different time, with a greater focus on the persona of Spectre and the choices he made for profits, honour or humanity. And the MechCommander stories were different too, often getting a broader perspective and more focus on the BT politics, if I recall correctly. They had some famous BT characters in there, I believe. You were part of rebellions and stuff. It was great.

A lot of people are saying PVE shouldn't take away from PVP in MWO, but... don't people miss that sort of stuff? For me, it's a lot more important than doing a scale pass on the Nova to make sure it's just as meta as the Stormcrow. Games have limited shelf life anyway, and I'd like to see some PVE in this game before it dies. Who knows when the next MW game will be out.

Yeah, definitely miss it.

Realistically, that kind of fidelity for a story though would be beyond a F2P game budget though. "PvE" in f2p match-based games usually means bots filling in for players.

I mean, I can wait for a non-f2p MW5 for a decade, built by whomever (PGI or someone else) if it happens at all. I know many need more immediate MW fixes, but there are a lot of other really good games to play in the mean time.

No, MW3 mission breifings were too long winded. The fact they were all video ate up a lot of disk space.

MW2 had more and better music. Both MW2 and MW3 were single CD games.

MW2: Mercs got it right with short narration and the remainder text.
